Post Viral Fatigue
July 21, 2013, 04:14:32 pm
Has anyone suffered some kind of post viral fatigue / unexplained long term exhaustion / glandular fever-like illness (but not confirmed as glandular fever) in the last two years?

I'm directing this to anyone:

1. Who climbs in the Peak area
2. Is male

My wife (one of those medical boffins) has a pet theory about this, so I'm posting this up to see if we get any replies that confirm or obliterate her theory!

Yeh I climbing in the peak area regularly and I had a post viral fatigue thing for 6 weeks around christmas last year. I put it down to over training but the symptoms were very similar to glandular fever and i felt tired all the time even with rest.

Yeah I did a couple of years ago after swine flu, but I'm also a lazy bugger.

Hmmm... But I'm in Devon and I went through it at the start of the year...

Not climbed in the Peak this past two years.

Long before Tick season, too.

So you're only looking for specific respondants so as to back up your theory then, or am i missing something.

I had same thing only not in peak (although had been in the peak) and it was 4 winters ago. Took best part of a year to get back to full power.

Thanks everyone so far....

Thanks also to anyone who's sent me PMs - that's fine too.

@George - Was that at the same time as when Bailes was there all the time doing Mecca/ext?

@Roddy - My wife says sod off  ;D. Don't take it personal though, she says that to me all the time too....

@Lee - very funny. Good on 2 levels. Not sure he's taken your bait though.

Its a very good point though, you'll only end up with "cases" (male, climbs in peak & has had glandular fever/fatigue post viral) and no "controls" to compare them to (male, climbs in peak & hasn't had glandular fever/fatigue post viral or male, climbs in peak & hasn't had viral infection at all).

Retrospective case-control style epidemiology/studies are quick and easy but prone to all sorts of problems.

Well I'm the opposite in some ways as I am female and havn't been to the peak in ages and at the moment I don't climb.

BUT,  have had glandular fever like illness fairly recently and I did fairly often go to the forest in Font (even that now hardly happens  :'( ).

I say glandular fever like as I was tested and it came back negative.

Not sure why OP is only wanting people who climb in the peak? would Font fulfil the same reasons or not?

Yes, but it was 8 years ago, not 2.
Confirmed as not GF by GP.
Not sure if that's a help or hinderance?

Think Bailes was on that around August/September, I had it a few months after that, more like December/January.
