Hello,
I'm genuinely interested in the standard that boulderers climb to. Whats the average? How many have climbed in the 8's.. is 7A a normal, good or sub average grade?

I've not put in + grades in the 5s and 6's to keep the poll simple - so if you've done 6B+ then that counts in the 6B box..

Its the hardest problem you've done in the last 12 months.. repeat, worked - however.. (no dabs!) :)

If you work in V grades - make your own conversion...

What if the hardest thing you've ever ticked was just a soft touch at the grade? Like way out?

I have a 7a tick at Porth Ysgo but there's no way that was any harder than 6b/V3. I have ticked another V3 outdoors too. Do I put 6b, which everyone there was convinced it was? Or tick 7a, which is what it was in two different guides? Because there's no way I can boulder 7a!

Fried >>  I thought a bit about that an I'd say either inside or outside.

Personally I think its outdoors that counts - but I know theres alot of folk on here who climb far more on plastic than outside (through circumstances and choice) so I think it probably doesnt matter. If you've done a 7C on plastic and it really FELT like 7C then put that down. Personally, I climb much worse on plastic than rock!

(but thats not the case for everyone etc..)

I dunno! The idea is for what is the hardest grade folk are climbing at the moment - so if you've never done anything higher than 6B, but got a (dubious) 7A at Ysgo then... I'd be tempted to go 6B...

If enough people answer the survey - then these sort of points will be ironed out - as there will be some folk in your position who would put 6B and some 7A :)

Its just to get a good overall idea really...

I do think you'd get a lower average on ukc and an even lower one at a climbing centre - this place is not quite normal.

Oh.  In that case I have to change my vote from 6B to V6.

Its your choice :) from my experience some wall grading is wack, some is pretty good.. then again you can say the same about many problems outdoors!

Well I've ticked 6b when I've actually got a 7a tick too... the poll is screwed already  :wavecry:

Indoors doesn't count, obvs. Or you're on a slippery slope that ends with taking 8a for holding the slopers on a beastmaker.

You have a very good point J B. Really alot of this is down to honesty - so I hope people are being fairly objective about how they climb. Yes it really should be outside.. But some folk do seem to spend most of the time indoors..

Anyway, it gives a good idea of where folk are at. I'm surprised its so high! At one point 10% had done 8A or higher..

Maybe the results are skewed because the higher grade climbers need an ego boost by saying how hard they climb and the lower grade climbers don't really care about grade....

5+ though it could just as well be 7C+ given the route descriptions.
No pumpy fist or fluttery heart grades in this poll.. Move along now

:D

Anyway. Ukb is just a subset of the bouldering massif, as J pointed out on the other thread you'd get a different response grade wise from a different community. I suspect.
