grigri 2 with mammut serenity?
June 12, 2013, 12:01:22 pm
Having lugged a 70 metre 10mm rope a thousand metres up to a hut in the Berchtesgaden Alps at the weekend, I have developed a sudden interest in lighter ropes.  ;)  And by a happy coincidence, one of my local shops has a 20% off deal on the Mammut Serenity.

I'm not quite sure how inwardly comfortable I am with the idea of a sub-9mm single rope though, and it would help me greatly if somebody here could reassure me from personal experience that a Mammut Serenity will not simply zip straight through my - or my partner's - GriGri 2 and kill me.

No personal experience belaying with <9mm ropes, though I did use one to ab off St. John's head on a 9mm static a couple of weeks back. It worked fine, didn't creep or jerk.

Petzl rate them for 8.9mm or greater. I'd guess you'd be okay on a bit less. The main question I'd ask what are the alternatives?

Nooooooo

For fucks sake dont buy the Serenity - its got the longevity of a butterfly.

The Revelation is the one to get.

My Gri Gri dates from the late 90's when they first came out and is "death modified"  8)

Precisely the sort of real experience-based advice I was hoping for, thanks.

The Revelation is fine on a standard gri-gri as well as gri-gri2 of course. Apart from being amazingly durable it is also available in 80m length which is what I have as it means even with use I can keep cutting the ends off and still have a long rope for some time and currently can have 40m double ropes for trad.

I went from freshly cut to core in one bolt to bolt of a Cheedale Cornice route whichever year it was last dry. Terrible rope.

Now, I understand they're pricey but my current Sterling ION 2 has taken an absolute hammering and is still going strong. For me, 9.4mm (my Beal Stinger II was also excellent unlike the joker) seems like a good compromise. I've ruined a few skinny ropes far too easily.

Be especially wary when the rope is new, they zip through easily at first (on an original gri gri).

I've currently got a Serenity and a gri gri 2. Works fine but second the comments regarding durability.

Thx all. Have definitely cancelled the Serenity.

I've never had a Sterling but was very impressed with the durability of one a mate had a couple of years ago. But afaik my nearest stockist is in Arco  :(

Will look out for a Revelation.

I've just bought a Stinger III (my first ever single rope). I have a new grigri, will report back. It came in a free ropebag!

Edit: it feels fucking slick in the office. I daresay it'll wear in a bit though...

can´t complain about my joker. i´m using it for the third year now, 3-5 days a week and a lot of projecting. looks like new.

The plastic window on Beal rope bags goes brittle if/when they get a bit cold then they just crack.
