How padded is the Pizza/sit-start?
Ankle-saving or more just false-confidence?
Was looking for something that could either fit in a suitcase or be checked in as such...

its about 2cm thick. Its stiff foam, and is ace as a foot cleaner mat, and I use it to put over individual rocks/pointy bits that might cause you some pain but are not really worth matting.. As its stiff its also really good to put across uneven surfaces under a bouldering mat - a mini platform if you like. As a stand alone ankle saver..? No. It might stop your foot getting bruised - and evens out the surface but its no substitute for a mat..

I've got a couple of the Asana Pro Spotter Pads and love em.  A bit pricey, but awesome.

Lots of ifs, but...

If you can get your hands on some foam and if you've got a friend with a sewing machine then it's mega easy to knock something like that up. I nabbed a bit of foam left over from the construction of a local wall and put together a passable imitation in 30 mins, and I can't sew for shit. Cost was a few quid for some cover material.
