Really manly gear
March 20, 2013, 07:58:26 am
I find the level of interest in Fiend's microcams thread yesterday, and mine a few weeks ago, interesting for a bouldering forum but  not entirely surprising. Expensive high tech toys and the implied Manly willingness to contemplate falls on 5KN aid-rated gear: what's not to like?

Now let's see who's willing to really man up and admit that they know the answer to this question: what range of industry-standard Chouinard Hexcentric sizes do DMM Torque Nuts cover?

Not a clue, but if anyone wants some oldskool hexes, I've got a bunch for sale. Mainly smaller/medium ones.

No idea.
But I know the gear for Western Front is a Troll 4, a Clog 1 and a hex 7.

I'm sure I could look it up easily enough, but I would guess the largest one would roughly match the largest Chouinard, but there would be half as many due to improved design i.e. 3-10?

Hexcentrics go up to 11   [/spinal tap]

Hex sizes

Torque nut sizes

Seems like the four Torque nuts cover about Hex 5½ - 9½.

But the Chouinard Hex only went up to 10. And according to that table of sizes, went down a lot smaller, hence the smallest dimension from the Needlesports website, is about the same as the top end of the no.6.

Chouinard Hex 11:

I had the set from 1 (little finger) to 11 (fist) but sadly the larger sizes seem to have vanished.  A well-placed Hex 11 was a thing of beauty.

The old wall at swindon link centre wall had trad leading routes, including a full height jamming/layback crack.

I was thinking a truly manly hex 11 definitely wouldn't have holes drilled in it to make it lighter.

Got a replacement set of HB offsets last year, now made by DMM. They've put holes in the larger sizes to reduce the weight. I nearly fell out me etriers.

The manly way was that you had to drill your own out in the manly days.

My WC Rocks are knackered with a few snapped wires that stick out and occasionally cut your finger open, that's well manly

I have two ropes. One I got off ebay. It's 11-12 years old now. The other is prob about 6 years old. I got it off someone who thought it was dangerous. It's now extra shagged since my friend 'slid' 6 foot on a tibloc.

Nowt wrong with them though. If you want to be manly, give someone a hug.  :coffee:
