Sounds like it’s a wheel bearing - any noise when you try to spin it? It could also be a sticking brake as you said.

Don’t think pma are open on a Sunday.. (few garages are). I’ve not driven it - but suspect you could limp it back to sheff pottering along at 50-60 and maybe stopping once or twice for 10-20 min to let it cool down?

There are other things it could be of course. The vibration (unusual from a wheel bearing - they normally give a full rumbling droning noise) could be wheel balance, a deformity in a tyre, worn suspension bushes....

Vibration pretty minor, you would only notice it if you drove the car regularly, girlfriend didn't even notice. Only noticeable on smooth roads.  Only vibrates over 50mph. The unaffected wheel keeps spinning when you give it a turn. The dodgy one can be turned pretty easily with one hand but doesn't keep spinning.

Sounds more like a tyre gone out of shape from the 50mph bit. More likely than a bearing which you would notice by the "drone" when going in a straight line all the time or of a sticking brake which would progressively get stickier and just smell bad.

Have checked the tyres pretty thoroughly and they seem fine.

Spoke to mechanic last night and he told me to drive a few miles and then touch hub to test temperature of brakes. If the brake is stuck on the hub will heat up. After driving about 8 miles the dodgy wheel brake drum was a bit warmer than on the other side. The mechanics said that if it was badly stuck on then touching the brake drum could burn me so I guess this is quite minor. Think I will risk the drive back to Sheffield and get it looked at in the week.

Cheers all.

I'd risk driving with a few breaks. Hopefully it's a rainy day...

I'm getting ready to update my whip. Car needs to be large diesel estate. Went and viewed an A6 Avant this week, perfect in every way other than it costing £540 per year tax  :o

So I've lowered my aspirations slightly, and find myself looking at Honda Accords and Mazda 6. Anyone got any experience with either of these?  Other options I had considered were Skoda Superb and 5 series but I don't have the coin for them. Budget is 5k absolute max.

Friend liked his Mazda6 and praised it highly before he got a Superb....

Oil burner or petrol?

Toyota Avensis or Citroen C5. Both depreciate heavily so should be able to find a relatively low mileage one that isn't too old for your 5K.

Dirty diesel. Your friends scenario doesn’t help mine haha! I really love the Superb, just can’t get that much coin together. Mazda is forerunner at present.

Avensis is an option. I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to cars. I’ll never own a French one!

A couple more left field options could be a Chrysler 300C, they do a V6 diesel that is massive! Or a Saab 95 if you can find one.

Tried using the autotrader app (for choice not buying) - you can filter the search to eg. Estate, diesel, 0-6 <9 secs etc. Etc... ?

The neighbours across the street love their Accord. 16 years old, going strong.

Good info on Avensis and Accord. Mazda still out in front I reckon, great spec, cheap to run and I like the look of them (Avensis is possibly a tad boring dare I say it)

3 litre V6 diesel Paul. Absolutely crackers!

If you like the Mazda have you considered a 5 rather than a 6 estate. 5+2 seat mpv that is really good value second hand.

True - I was looking at these as Nai had one. If you're patient / flexible you can pick up low miler mid/late 2000s models for a mere £2k.

The Mazda 5 is one step too close to a people carrier I'm afraid. Its bad enough that I have to give up on my dream of owning something totally stupid like an S4, R32, Impreza or other equally fast and unsuitable car. I couldn't bring myself to crusing about in an MPV. Sorry if I sound like a wally, just I know what I like, and know what I really don't like.

Currently cruising about in a very aged XC70. I must admit, I find the car economical and comfortable, but not my style. And you know I need style TC.

Hang on let me get your requirements straight: fast, stylish, low tax, practical, spacious, cheap. Anything I missed?

Almost mate! Not that bothered about speed, but needs to be able to pick its arse up when needed. When u say stylish, I mean not boring ad not a people carrier/MPV. Tax needs to be less than that hideously overpriced A6 by at least half. And practical and spacious both a must. I'm a bit of a car snob and have been set in my ways for years. So basically no French motors, no Vauxhall, no Ford, no Italian (sorry Nibs). German or Japanese is effectively where I am, and edging more towards Japanese as German stuff is way to pricey. Hence my interest in Honda Accord, Mazda 6,Totota Avensis etc.
