If you cut my other halfs dad down the middle I'm pretty sure you'd find something similar to the blue and white battenburg of BMW.

They've had all sorts, currently a 730d and a z4 and both have been ridiculously expensive at times. I believe one of the bulbs in the 730d is hidden somewhere in the chassis and it uses fibre optics to route the light to one of the clusters, when this failed the bill was astronomical, ditto when one of the parking sensors failed. Depreciation on both cars has been huge.

I worked out the other day that my only expenses that weren't consumables (i.e. tyres, oil) on the Fabia had been a £30 (fitted) brake light switch, a rear wiper that someone stole one day and some rear bodywork where my other half argued with a fence post whilst reversing. I may have forgotten something but at around 60k miles of motoring, in around 2 years, I thought this was immense. Depreciation wasn't even that bad either.

I had the same experience as TomTom with an e46 '53 320d. Bomber.

I upgraded last year to an e90, no problems so far but the 1st owner had paid for the full BMW service pack so for a couple of years I won't be getting (too) fleeced.

Worrying to hear about run flat problems, still on the set that came with it. I have been told I could fit a space saver in my boot cavity, shirley the vast boot in yours Shark will accommodate one?

When I got my golf, I thought (I mis read the spec) it had a squirty can instead of a space saver - and I had one lined up on ebay for £40... of course it came with one (a space saver) so cancelled - but you can find them dead easy on fleabay.. getting the jack gubbins might be harder - but at least MrAA could change your tyre for you if you have one...

I toyed with the idea of running the 320 on two space savers in the snow..... ;)

Doesn't feel so vast in the run down to Font with the 5 of us baggage and mat (strapped to the ceiling).

The boot cavity is tiny now so doubt it would fit a space saver evn so when it comes round for replacements I'm going for standard tyres which will improve the ride too.

I can see me looking in here a lot.
Destroying the atmosphere and using up natural resources is my first love.
The bouldering is a new thing for me but I've been flogging the guts out of cars,
vans, lorries and even buses ever since I got my licence.
remember the old saying, if it's got tits or tyres it's gonna be trouble or expensive or both.  :2thumbsup:

If the clutch pedal return spring on a ford focus goes (other cars arer also available and may have similar hassles) Your options are - get dealer to fit (£150 plus) or buy the bit for fiver and do it yourself, but expect to pay in frustration, sweat and blood. I chose the latter and have hands that look like I've been jamming in broken glass. Should have taped up better.

And have a look sometime before it snaps so you know where it needs to go back. I can talk you through the fix step by step now, including telling you where you should tape up.

Still, £150!

Looks like I'm doing alright judging by the above but the front tyres on my B7 Passat are well in need of replacing after 16000 miles, and I'd love to a: get something decent (either performance tyres that'll stand up to some ragging, or the Nokian winter tyres that are good for all year) and b: Stick it to those fuckers at the dealership and get them fitted elsewhere at hopefully half the price. Preferably a shit hot tyre for reasonable outlay would do me. Needs to last a year only - 10000 miles at the very most, before I take it back to them bald

Blimey  - thats fast. Got 42k out of my Golfs front tyres and theres still some life left in em...

I'd ring around - many places have specials, or a couple they want to get rid of for the best price.. Also all tyres now come with a sticker/rating like the one you get on washing machines etc.. with ABDCE ratings for economy, noise and stopping distance. Not for burnout capability/endurance though ;)

tyres, like anything else, you get what you pay for.
I've had a few sets of pirellis and they where good but wore fast. My tyre of choice for the past decade or so has been goodyear eagle f1's (GSD2's, GSD3's and now the asymetrics) and of the 3 sets I've had on 2 diferent cars (1 RWD, t'other 4WD) they have been excellent. I've also had a set of goodyear excellence that I got a very good deal on and they were really good also and lasted for ages.

Just had the shitreon C4 down for an MOT, new shocker and newcontrol arm required plus a load of other advisories that I'm not having done (£250). its only done 40k FFS! what a piece of shit car that is. Once its MOT'd, its being sold asap. On the plus side put a deposit today on its replacement  ;D

I just had to shell out for an entire new steering rack after the steering went funny, caused by a blown seal and leaking power steering fluid and excess wear on the rack. arse. the fabia was doing so well as well! Glad to have it back now as the boutique Italian coffee shop the garage lent me was absolutely terrible!

Air con has stopped working, and kwik-fit guy pointed out it was the belt that feeds the air con and other electrics, which has indeed been making a squealing noise on start up during this last week. Apparently called the serpentine belt.

Is this an easy job for a garage to fix? Would a standard garage do it or do I need a specialist?

Or drive belt.. assuming its not an unusual car sounds like a normal garage job.. but there are many reasons aircon can stop working.... unfortunately..

Aye, I just thought it needed a recharge (can't remember the last time it had one, I don't pay much attention to air con up here usually), but the KF guy had the decency to send me away to get the belt checked before they tried that.

What would be drive belt symptoms?

When you switch on the aircon (not the fan, the aircon specifically) with the engine running is there a sqealing noise? If so thats a loose belt that slips over the aircon pulley when its loaded up (when you switch it on). Often drive belts also run the alternator (electrics), power steering pump and maybe other things depending on the model of car - so I doubt the belt has broken otherwise something else would not be working (unless on your car there is one belt to drive the aircon).

Nope the belt isn't broken, it is just squealing on start-up and for maybe 10 mins after.

Bit of googling and it is the drive belt. I guess serpentine belt is an american term??

Its a normal garage job (independent ie doesn't need main dealer) in my view.. but this might not fix the aircon! (sorry!) Though if its squealing on startup then its not going to hurt to get it tightened. If the belt is OK, then its a 5-10 min job to tighten it (depends on car type of course)

Now I remember... Those worn out tyres were the Contis that VW factory fitted, and they supposedly 'only expect 15k out of a front pair'...

I ended up with a pair of Yokohama Cdrive 2 instead, 34 quid each fitted..

I got these at trade price. Even so, you assume a dire t correlation between performance / quality and price. Which is bollocks, unless you're Kanye I suppose

3rd party fire and theft? You're not bothered about the last one, probably have 2nd covered so it's clear what you're paying for.
