Don't some tyre 'pressure' sensors rely on the abs sensors to tell when a wheel is rotating at a different speed to the others (different diameter from puncture etc..)

See direct vs indirect TPMS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tire-pressure_monitoring_system

Recent Bimmers likely to have direct from what I can glean from a quick search.

MrsTT's polo has this, my golf doesn't - except it does but it's hidden in the SW and can get it with the right program.. or pay for it :) Don't you love car manufacturers... (Indirect that is)

I've only done <14k (in a year and 8 months) and I've had 4 new front tyres. All punctures, 3 in the first couple of months and one the other week.  :furious:

When I had a Golf (GT) I had 11 new tyres in two years.  Three were down to kerb scrapes while parking outside the house golfballing the waffer-thiin walls, one of which was under a week old.  At the time I was commuting to Buxton staright across the Peak and would get through a front pair in 6,000 miles so was changing them every five or six months.  Nice commute but worked out at about £2.50/day in tyres

Jaspers Golf is a fairly sensible one (slightly less sensible than mine ;) #oldgit) but has (by modern standards) fairly non-low profile tyres.. In fact I think they are the same as mine.. (205/16/55's).
I've not had a puncture since 2003/4 (I've forgotten) and since then have averaged 20k PA.. So I'm surprised you've had that many punctures J...

Reading this makes me appreciate my basicasfuckmobile - wheel goes the wrong shape, you put the spare on and get wheel fixed.

Jasper's enemies strew nails and broken glass on his driveway purposefully.

Yes as I said it's just down to pure bad luck (unless andy is right).

None of the tyres have been worn in the slightest and all 4 have had a nail/screw/random bit of metal stuck in them. I did start getting a bit paranoid after the first three! I had almost identical tyres on my Polo and never had a puncture in 7 years. Just luck.

Yes they're the same tyres as yours Tom. I think the only difference between our cars is the engine?

well, I just forked out £500 for 4 new goodyear eagle f1 assymetric 2 97Y (extra load), paid a bit extra for the extra strength tyres. come down to font and cam-blet tensionor has gone.
full euro breakdown cover, french garage wanting 2300 euro to fix (£700 job in uk), because it can be fixed breakdown cover won't cover towing car back so would have had to pay for that. basically got me over a barrell and a red hot poker up my arse.
robbing, robbing bastards!!!!!!!!!!!!!
car only worth about 4k and still not got car back yet, propably phone back tomorrow saying they need more money off me.
really really angry with (did I already say?) robbing french garage bastards.

Fucking brutalised Jim. I once had to pay £80 for a set of 4 sparkplugs for my old Bedford CF 250 van. Weren't available anywhere in France so had to get shipped express from UK to Briancon. Wish I had serviced it before I left, could have got them for a tenner.

Apart from how they look, what are the other advantages to the different tyres?
All my cars are shit so never had this quandary.

And sorry to hear about the font nonsense, very grim...

Load bearing (for Jims case) and other shizzle.. All tyres now come with a rating for their economy and stopping effectiveness and noise thanks to the EU (a genuine not sarcastic thanks there..) - along the lines of a - f (like energy ratings for appliances etc..)

..BMW=overrated/bag of shite.

Completely agree.
I got rid of my 5 series estate just over a year ago. Constant niggles, the computer telling me to do this and that. Expensive to service. One of those promise of quality  vs experience of ownership equations that didn't match at all.
A bit like Apple devices and their bloody software.

I had the other side of the coin... got a 03 (then 5yr old) 320d touring with 60k on the clock - sold it 3 years later with 120k. Services were fine (local indy) and only major repairs were particulate filter that could have been £800+ but I got a 'racing' (check me eh!) stainless steel replacement for £130.. 2 hours labour to fit and fine...

Build quality on a 120k mile car was better than the brand new golf that replaced it....
