Do any UKBers run a Panda Cross 4x4? We're back in the position of needing two cars for work rather than being able to have one practical car (the A6) and something less practical (the 595).

I've got a panda 4x4 but not a Cross one..

Ta. I've now got a Panda Cross 4x4 (the 0.9L Twinair). I'm instantly having minor electrical gremlins though; TPS system has a fault and the start/stop system is throwing up a general fault (before it got cold and with a fully charged battery). The main dealer I bought it from are also being far worse than any indy-dealer I've ever dealt with.

Batteries take a hammering in the cold, so if it's already old and weak, the the cold might be the end of it - try to minimise any short journies.

Just a thought on this.

We’ve never had a problem with our battery yet, but also don’t know how old it is.

The van will end up being parked outside for 6 days and we’re unlikely to use it in that time.

Is there any benefit in bringing the battery inside the house for that time? Waking up on Boxing Day with it dead would be a pain in the arse!

I really think itll be fine. Worst case scenario get a jump start, or start it each day.

Its been really cold in the UK the last week and my van wouldn't start one morning. Learned from Google to turn off the radio and heater and half depress the clutch before turning the ignition. Its caught every time since. Its amazing how much juice the car pulls from the battery while you're warming the glowplugs up on an old diesel via the heater/radio.

Just park on a slight hill?

I was too lazy/tight to replace the battery in my E46 for circa 1 year and would routinely bump it. Trickle chargers are incredibly cheap and if you're feeling flush you can by li-ion jump start packs (my neighbour uses his on his quite large tractor) that are tiny.

I keep bleating on about this but if you buy a £10 OBD bluetooth dongle you can live monitor your battery when driving (or not) and it'll give you a good indication on health. They're very useful and very cheap.

EDIT: Yes, or just get a jump off someone (buy a decent thick set of leads and they'll last you a lifetime).

And learn to connect them properly.

Fortunately our drive has a slight downhill, Enough for one shot, and I usually get it, plenty of practice over the years.

My pal was the superstar of the Magic Wood parking this early autumn as he had a jump-start battery pack that he could charge via USB. Whilst I was there he jump-started three vehicles. Keep meaning to get one as I've had a few unfortunate incidents involving leaving my spotlights on and returning to a dead battery. Fortuantely both occasions I was close to plenty of other vehicles to jump start!

Anybody recommend an engine rebuilding type garage in Manchester? I want to check if my engine can be rebuilt/replaced after an oil starvation event, but have no clue as to which garage to contact and don't want to ring them all....
Ta.

What's the car/engine? Do you have the ability to drain the oil and see if there's any metallic stuff in there?

Allegedly makes the job easier for the starter motor according to google.

Ford Cmax 1l ecoboost.
I guess I might have the ability but I'm not sure I have the inclination. I'm not sure I could apply the gained knowledge in a useful way... What would my actions be if it was or wasn't metalic bits?

It would give you an indication if there was any obvious damage / the scale of damage.

Can I ask what caused the starvation event? I'm just being a bit nosey here as I was watching the other day of a repair on a crash damaged M5 where the engine seemed to have survived starvation as the pyro fuse had blown (so the engine cut prior to the oil being dispersed all over the floor).

I'm pretty sure one of Slackline's mates was a vehicle mechanic who specialised in EcoBoost engines as I seem to recall discussing them with him at the time when my MiL bought one (1.0 in a Fiesta). I'll ask via other channels.

not been able to have anybody have a proper look but the suspicion is there is a fault with ecoboosts where an internal belt delams and clogs up a filter causign the oil pump to stop working so you loose oil pressure and if you don't stop immediatly your engine gets pained. This is based on the in the dark analysis of a passing AA person and the internet..

Yikes! That seems to suggest you're likely on the money:
Quote
There are several issues that can trigger a low oil pressure warning, they range from something as simple as the oil level being low to a faulty pressure sensor, unfortunately our technicians noted every 1.0l Ecoboost vehicle that passed through our workshop with a low oil pressure fault seemed to be suffering from the same issue, the material of the timing belt (which is found inside the engine and known as a 'wet belt') had started to break down.

This issue is developing far earlier than the manufacturers recommended timing belt replacement interval which is set at 150,000 miles or 10 years, some of the failures we've observed have occurred on vehicles that are just over four years old, one had barely covered 30,000 miles which is well within the timing belt lifetime as specified by the manufacturer.

Got the car booked in on Tuesday with a garage after ringing a number who didn't want to have a look. He says he has seen quite a few cars with this problem and often with a new oil pump/belt and a change of oil etc they are ok and the horrible noise is meerly the sound of an engine running with no oil rather than an acutally fucked engine. He says he has sorted them out a treat. Will have to see if I stopped in time after the light came on...TBC.

Let us know how you get on! Slackers hasn't replied as of yet.

My MiL is going to have a discussion with the local garage (Ford main dealership) off the back of that article. She's only done 25k since about 2015 and the car is immaculate so it would be a shame for it to get wrecked. That 1.0 engine is really fun too.

In other news the Abarth I sold has had significant problems since I sold it (gearbox and driveshaft) to the point the new owner has returned it and has been given a full refund (he contacted me through the owners group).

I ended up doing this today. Our local Ford dealership (who have generally been quite good to deal with) told me that they haven't seen any of the 1.0 EcoBoost engines present with this issue. However, I'd got the date of registration wrong for her car which is actually Mar 2013 so it's basically at the 10yr threshold. It's now booked in to have it done (so thanks erm, sam). The cost was pretty dismaying mind at £1350  :o

He has now but he's no longer in direct contact with the person.

Appreciating that this question has been answered several times in this thread (and others) has anyone got fresh advice on a family car to buy with climbing/bouldering trips in mind?

From this thread I have Skoda Octavia or Superb in mind, with Berlingo a further possibility (even though I’m not a fan of the aesthetic).

Aiming for something for two adults, two young children/babies, plus associated paraphernalia, alongside at least one but hopefully two pads.

Goal would be weekend crags with occasional Font trip. Last time I rented a small SUV, think was a Vauxhall Crossland X, seemed to work pretty well with no spare tire.

If I only one car then would need to use for commuting as well. Currently using Corsa which seems to be on last legs and just about coping with one child, no climbing stuff, but unlikely to be big enough for two.

Given the recent changes in fuel prices etc does anyone have any suggestions/experience with above cars/requirements that might help?

Also trying to bear in mind environmental impact and don’t really know how changing to an electric world in the future may effect things now. Any insight much appreciated!

I'd consider looking at Toyota Avensis/Auris/Corolla estates, i've had my Avensis since 2013 and done 183k in it and it's just nudged over 201k on the clock ( Paul B recorded the moment it hit 200k on our way to the airport recently), its been a great car and very reliable, for the mileage it still feels tight as a nut. It's no sports car but it has loads of room and features and tows my rally car around with no problems too. On long motorway blasts itll do 50+mpg and 40/45 around town if its flattish which is very respectable for the size of the car.

Hard to disagree with what's being said really and I can vouch for it not feeling like a 200k mile car (even if the interior suggests everything put in that car during the 200k miles still remains there, including glove box lighter fluid?). It absolutely swallowed two bike boxes, luggage for two and of course two people recently which was a less certain affair than with my A6 (although it did go in eventually).

I took my first Uber on Sat. and that was a hybrid Auris and the boot was also respectably sized.

The Octavia (vRS) would still be my pick. I wouldn't step up in size to the Superb mainly as I live adjacent to very narrow lanes and even the marginal increase in width feels a bit uncomfortable. I can't remember why but TG looked at these recently (albeit for brand new cars) and the Superb got ditched leaving the Octy still standing (MPG?).

I have just placed a deposit on a 4th Gen Octavia estate to replace my 2nd Gen Octavia vRS estate.

I too considered a Superb estate as an option, but decided that the combination of ~5 mpg penalty and it feeling a bit "floppy" around corners on a test drive was enough to outweigh the benefits of 5cm extra leg room and 10cm more boot space.

Also, for comparable money i've got a '22 plate Octy with 9k miles versus '20 plate 30k miles for the Superb.
