Bouldering mats on Air France
March 11, 2013, 03:13:51 pm
This may have been asked before, but I can't find it. Has anyone brought bouldering mats on an Air France flight? (They give you a baggage allowance) They would seem to be slightly too big but stuff like golf clubs and body boards are not classed as outsize.
We will be flying from Dublin, but I assume the UK is the same.
Any help appreciated

Thanks
Malcolm

PS. It probably won't kill us to rent mats there, any good places?

Airfrance may stiff you on the way back, because they have no conveyor for outsize baggage near their lovely new check in desks at CDG, so a man (or woman) actually has to transport the stuff on a trolley through the airport, which has to be paid for.

They let us away with it once, but said that they should have charged 200 euros iirc, but this was 3 years ago

I'm sure others on here will have had more recent experiences with them

Is that at every terminal? We've flown to CDG with pads before no worries. Think it was with BA.

Anyway maisonbleau hire pads as do others.

I can't remember the terminal, but the airfrance bit was genuinely like an island, insofar as it was separated from anyone elses infrastructure. It was on the first floor and dead centre. We had flown out there with no hassle whatsoever. I'd expect other (non-budget) airlines would still be fine with pads.

Thanks for all the help, we'll probably not risk it and hire pads out there.

are you referring to Airfrance at CDG, or just pads in general? My experience with them led me to believe that they would have been looking for 200 euros excess payment for a large duffel bag, let alone anything bigger.

I'm well aware that most airlines/airports have no problem with pads unless you say "here is a very unusual package thingy, it's not really a bag, or a mattress, but you fall on it and sleep on it  and isn't listed on your sporting equipment list, so i thought i better be helpful by pointing out that you might think you have a problem"

I hired pads from Neil at maisonbleau (http://maisonbleau.com/).  He was happy to rent them if they arent being used by guests.  Good value but they were well used to say the least!  Might want to double up with them  :)
