just whack it on to youtube as it is - their compression/conversion system will do a reasonable job

any further compression will only make it less good

if the picture is a bit washed out, you can use the youtube editing tool after you've uploaded it - just click the auto fix button or whatever it is called

Just a thought.

Collectively we seem to be putting together quite a library of not commercially available, old, great climbing videos.

Would it be a good idea to have like a library of all these video links on a new wiki page? All in one easy to access list.

Time to start learning how to write Wiki's then! That is after all the beauty of Wiki's, they are editable by anyone with the inclination to do so.

An alternative if you have Google/YouTube account might be for you to make a playlist of the videos there and link to it.

Neither prevents the videos from being removed from YouTube though.

Since Everest and Lakeland are still available I'd better now put them up. I've tried to stick the Joe and Don one on Youtube, but it keeps rejecting it (never uploaded to youtube before...)

So - after 58 million hours of painfully slow upload, YouTube has failed it as it exceeds maximum video length.

It wants me to verify my account by inputting my mobile phone number.. another nice little data mining process by google. Next they'll be asking for finger prints and identifiable birth marks. Ironically - they already probably have mobile number as I have an android phone, linked to google etc.

Televised first ascent of coronation street at cheddar

Old televised ascent of old man of hoy by a load of famous old climbers.

Remaining 2 episodes of sids masterpiece 80s rock athlete series.

Regarding the latter, i was wondering if anyone on here is active in caving? There may be a sid perou collector amongst the caving community, who is a completist collector who has a copy?

Quality is not brilliant I'm afraid as the VHS was a bit knackered to start with (cause it had been watched a million times over (especially the millstone sections... so so smooth

The arete solo at millstone edge is probably one of the nicest stylish pieces of climbing I've ever seen. Smoother than Pete livesey on downhill racer

also, does anyone have the climbing episodes of the old TV series High 5 - there was some quality Jerry and Ron Kauk footage from the two or three climbing episodes they did (might still have on VHS in my parents attic so will check when back in the UK in March)

Quick recap and update:

To date, collective sterling work has added the following old climbing tv programmes added to you tube:

Don Whillans last climb
fingertip phenomenon
body machine
pushing the limits
rock athlete (1 episode)

A third party has contacted Sid Perou on our behalf to ask for access to the remaining 2 episodes of rock athlete (i am awaiting his response).

I am happy to collate all we have put up on YouTube, into a TV programmes links page on the wiki at some point (i am equally happy for someone to beat me to it).

Wanted list to date:

televised first ascent of coronation street
televised ascent of old man of hoy
climbing episodes of high 5

any other requests for old climbing tv programmes? Add them to the list.

I've posted on UKC to acknowledge this thread and also added an annotation to the first 15 secs of each vid saying " Made available through UKBouldering collective effort"

edit - now moved annotations to top of screen so they don't get covered up by Go Ogle ads
