Spain Bouldering (Not Albarracin)
January 09, 2013, 01:47:11 pm
Off to Spain for a weeks bouldering at the end of the month. Has anyone been to Savassona and El Cogul?  any idea of conditions etc at this time of the year. Also is it possible to camp discreetly?

Targassone I imagine might be a bit snowy?

cheers

Some (sparse, although it has a few links) info on the Wiki.

At least as it currently stands it gives you some names to start digging further, if you find useful web-sites/info please do add links to it in that page, and if you go somewhere it would be great if you could write it up on the Wiki upon return (Wiki's don't just spring out of nowhere)

Sure I can feedback some first hand accounts. I've got the Ebloc guide, I was just hoping for first hand experience, thanks though.

Targassone I imagine might be a bit snowy?

According to my guide it's often possible to ski in the morning and climb in the afternoon. Freaking freezing I'd bet.

We went to Targassonne in Easter, there was still quite a bit of snow about then. Strange in terms of weather/temperatures there, it would be cold then an hour later it would be boiling hot, then it would snow......etc.

I recon it probably  be a goer if you weren't camping otherwise take three down jackets, its bloody cold at night even in Easter!

It's gone below zero at night when I've been there in August!

Lived in BCN through winter of 2010/11. Savassona was my local crag. Lovely spot, flat landings and shady. Enough for four or five days at a throw. There was a new guide in early 2011, much better on grades and maps than the general guide.
Published by Editorial Alpina.

El Cogul, is less attractive. Steep landings, no shade and be careful where you park as the locals can get a tad funny if you block their access (to what, I never worked out). There is a new road layout and a new visitor centre for the rock art...

Some info here: http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,10726.msg178461.html#msg178461

The EBloc guide is pretty good overall (but tending toward dated now) for bouldering all over Spain.

http://www.climb-europe.com/RockClimbingShop/EBloc-Bouldering-in-Spain.html

If you are arriving via BCN, call in to Climbat (wall), they always had a good range of local topos.

Don't bother with the Granite around BCN, it's all Sika and loo roll...

Check out some of the sport routes on Monserat, not because the routes are so great, just because the place is so spectacular (good rest day visit to).

Oh yeah. On sunny days, Savassona can be around 20 ish deg. C even at this time of year. El Cogul can be damned hot even in winter...

cheers for all the info everyone.

Cogul and Savassona should provide a weeks worth of fun. Weather factors mean Targassone or Albaraccin may be in or out.

Have you looked into Santa Gadea? Sandstone (similar to County apparently) and grit(!) in Basque region. There is a guide book for it in the shop at The Works. Seems good from what I've seen/heard.

There was an article by Richie Patterson on it in one of the mags a while back, looked ace.

Just googled - a few references plus youtube vids, one by the aforementioned Patto.

I recall reading something by Percy about Santa Gadea.
