You may notice we have opened a left-side panel up to commercial logos of businesses that have entered into long-term sponsorship with UKB. (Thanks ... The Depot). The concept is that these will only change occasionally unlike the banners ads in the top horizontal slot, which may be purchased for as short a period as a week. We know this looks a little odd aesthetically right now, but please hold back the judgement for a while.

Why not do what they do at the start of commercial climbing vids and have giant logos in the middle of the screen for 7seconds a pop, before the forums start   

Seriously though, it's hardly imposing having the logos down the side and seems a nice idea.

Has this gone awry or is it just a rubbish work computer thing? - inside the last hour all the left panel adverts have gone horizontal - squeezing the rest of the forum until it's really thin.

It was doing it on my work pc before I left but seems ok on tablet at home

fine here at home on FF, refreshing didn't make any diff at work - but we are forced to use IE6 or some such shite there...

HA HA! Good one slackers. I don't really understand the open source debate but I know which internet browser works best and it certainly ain't IE.

For me its a philosophical one, I think mr__j5 and tomtom are approaching it from a pragmatic point of view.  Start with the philosophical side and then work out the problems with implementing it IMO (just because some are poorly managed doesn't mean they all are as there are hugely successful open-source software projects...that make money too!).
