Font - walkie talkies and gps
October 03, 2012, 09:07:54 am
Hi guys,

Heading to Font later this month and one of our party won't be bouldering much because they're injured and is planning on doing some walking near where we'll be bouldering.

We were thinking of keeping touch in with some Motorola walkie talkies rather than using mobiles to keep costs down, anyone used walkie talkies before in the forest or think they'd work ok?

The other thing is that this person hasn't been to Font before so in order to stop em getting too lost was thinking of using a gps a bit and was wondering if the tree cover hampered the signal.

Thanks,

John

No idea about walkie talkies other than that ones with decent distance cost a bit.
GPS is more faff than its worth IMO.

What's wrong with a map? All the paths have 'street' signs. Walkie talkies and gps seems a little excessive for font.

Lol, you start a thread and leave it for a bit and it wanders off at a tangent  :great:

The idea behind the tech was I remember how confusing I found the Font area and finding my way round the first time I went.
Don't worry we do have maps and stuff too.

It's just that we're going in one car so it'll be handy to keep in touch and not be sat around waiting for ages for the other person to turn up cause they're lost  :slap:

Just get a copy of 7+8 (or 5+6 for that matter). If you can get lost following the maps/descriptions in there then you shouldn't be allowed out of the house on your own. Plenty of scope for walking to scope out off the beaten track areas / problems which would be an ideal passtime for your injured person.

Does the 5+6's have the same maps as the 7+8's?
They're great maps.

Only thing is that 5+6 only covers certain areas (Central and Southern) whereas 7+8 is everywhere.

Definitely don't let your friend get lost unless they have a getting bummed by a boar fetish. Font terrifies me in more ways than one.

Motorola walkie takies differ a lot in ability. I've got some frm the us which work on line of sight up to about 10 miles and about 7 otherwise but apparently operate on an illegal frequency  in Europe. Ones I've tried locally are about 5 miles at best maybe a bit more in flattish terrain ( I've only used them when skiing)

Certainly don't rely on getting phone reception. Some areas are fine, some have no coverage whatsoever. Have you considered a length of twine and two Ovaltine tins?

If you've got the IGN map, that should stop all but the most map-illiterate (me) getting lost.

Why don't you just employ him as a cameraman? Maybe take a rope and harness and he could get some different angles.

He could go around and look for climbers on their own, offering to back up their fake claims for money.

Google maps covers a lot of the tracks on Font - when we went I downloaded the relevant tiles before we left and used them to get to a few more esoteric crags successfully.
