Yorkshire Grit - Which crag??
November 02, 2012, 10:22:18 pm
Probably heading down from Edinburgh Mon/Tue. Weather looks good, cold (7C) and dry with wee bit of wind.

Which crags are dry/clean/not horrendously cold/etc this time of year?
Been to Amscliff before, so would prefer to go somewhere new.
Would Brimham (Black Chipper, Titfield Thunderbolt etc) be worth a shot?

Anyone with some local knowledge would be great cheers.

Brimham is always a good bet, as long as the weather has been good. There's usually something dry. I'll let you know my feelings as to conditions on Sunday.

The problem with Brimham is that its very spread out.
Caley and Earl are 2 of the best crags in the country, if you've not been to these I'd try and go there although I've no idea what conditions are like at the moment as I've only just got back in the country

It's been drizzling and windy up here in Ilkley for the last few days.  I would be very surprised if Caley and Earl were substantially dry.  Likely only worth visiting after a few days of decent weather - both crags are north facing so dry very slowly.

What about slipstones if you're coming down the A1? Some of the most perfect gritstone around. If you've not been before Widdop dries pretty quickly and can be combined with Bridestones and both are class.

+1 for slipstones. If you are coming down just for the climbing it's just off the A1 and an hour or so closer than most of the other Yorkshire crags

Cheers for all the info. Weather looking good Mon, but crappy Tue, probably not worth it for 2 days, boo!. Been to Slipstones, great crag. Guessed the North facing crags might be grim. Will put Widdop on the list of places for next time. Fingers crossed for next week

In Harrogates for the weekend and planning a day at Brimham. Any advice where the best bouldering areas for beginners are? I have the excellent new guide.

Also, any recommendations for a walk round there?

Cheers.

Pommel area has the highest density of lower grade problems as well as some spicy and excellent mid-grade problems too. Just wander around the area for your walking needs, it's good fun to explore!

+1 on Pommel. The boulder to the right of the big roof has quite a few easy problems and there are others. Traverse of the slabby side of leaning block is a good challenge, assuming it's not overrun with freshers.

There are loads of walks around Brimham on the moor and in the nearby woods. Or you can walk round the reservoirs near Blubberhouses.
