Did this when I was at uni with no problems. Wrapped them in tarpaulin and used three straps (one ay the extreme front) and through the open doors. Even managed over a ton on the French motorway.

hi there i did this with my mates 6 weeks ago we wrapped three moon saturns together in pallet wrap (stronger clingfilm)which i bought from a packaging factory for a fiver then wratchet strapped it to the roof and we managed a maximum speed of 80mph without to much wind noise. i recon a tarp at 60/70mph would be quite noisey but never tried it so dont know . ;)good luck

Point the hinge of the mats forwards, industrial cling film sounds like a good idea.

We didn't wrap mats with anything and had the hinge backwards which temporarily created an air brake, as the pad tried to open.

Even correctly orientated we didn't get much above 60mph, but I think this was down to the C reg golf, rather than the mats.

We strapped ours onto the back of our car in the states. It doesn't do the paintwork any favours. I'd do it to take the pads to and from font, but not to and from the crag everyday. Sand on the pads will ruin the car.Could you be inventive with a bike rack? I can lend you a roof rack if you're near leeds.

have you thought about those inflatable roof racks - like two inflatable bars that sit between pad and roof - may protect paint work a bit.

The main reason we wrapped them in a tarp was the weather was rubbish on the way down. If you fold it properly it shouldn't flap about too much. We were camping so we had loads of space in the boot after setting up camp.

It's worth remembering to pack whatever you need to wrap the pads in again for the journey back. We had space on the way back for them to go into the boot.

Works fine - allowed the diesel Yaris they were on to have an auto cruise control of 80mph (foot flat to the floor) ;)

If you're worried about scratches on the roof, but a cloth/thin blanket (cheap fleece throw is good) over the roof first.

A roof rack?  In Alaska?  I thought non-pickup drivers were escorted to the border.

You're allowed "sedans" if you strap a road killed elk/moose/democrat/largemammal to the front... ;)
