I'd have thought it was a sensible question.  You can get to Dumby on the train, but if you're going from Bristol it may take a little while.

You can get anywhere on public transport if you don't mind a bit of walking. I hear Alaska is good this time of year.

Grindleford/hathersage train stations will put you walking distance to a lot of bouldering.

Do you have thumbs... you could always hitch from a main train station out to the crags  :great: (a much neglected form of travel in my book  :( )

I think what the above comments are trying to say is 'where do you live'

Loch Buie may be worth a look too.  You can get a train to Glasgow, then a coach to Oban, then Calmac across to Mull.  There's a coach from Craignure to Fionnphort which will let you off at the Loch Buie turn off.  From here you can walk to the venue, or thumb a lift (the locals are great).

There's a bus stop by the Torridon Celtic Jumble and a free campsite too...

Caley Roadside. High volume of quality all grade grit bouldering and the bus from Leeds stops right next to it. (the names a clue..)

It would help if you said where you were coming from/planning or thinking of staying though...

Judging by this post he is in That London.

In which case the correct answer to his question is either:
(a) Fontainebleau
or
(b) Make friends with someone with a car

decent and cheap accommodation nearby .

Aside from the fact that decent and cheap is often an oxymoron, hotels generally aren't that cheap.  Camping/bivying are though.

jjjj don't be sensitive. By not identifying which areas are close/of interest to you, you make it difficult for people to give appropriate advice as to where to visit.  Look at the dearth of serious replies: your question is too broad.

Loch Buie is very nice, good call.

Ardmair is a bit more limited but good fun and the scenery is even better.

Are taxis regarded as public transport? If so the world is your oystercard.
