To quote Sweden's best non-female rock climber:

Quote
To me it symbolised a bunch of spoiled middle-class American pro-climbers naïve attempt to create a group-identiy when they by themselves totally lack personality.  When I am watching flicks like “Schengen Files” I am filled by disgust, and seriously wants to quit climbing for good. It is a pathetic attempt to identify with an urban gang-culture they in reality know fuck-all about.

That's interesting Jwi, would you or anyone else for that matter call it a rant? I read it n thought every bit of what was said was right on the money. He could ave delivered this news tongue in cheek, deadpan or indeed ranting but as a statement I thought every bit was true. As we know, the game is the game, n you can't hate the playa

Umm not sure about that dense.

On Monday I met a friend of mine who I know through playing tennis. We are both pretty typical middle aged white folk. We were dressed in suit and tie. Rather than shake hands or say hello when we met, we tagged fists.

I also sometimes use words like nowt, tinternet, positiveteh and aye which suggest regional allegiances I do not have.

No real agenda, just fun to do. A bit like climbing, eh?

Erm, I don't really understand your post with relation to mine imarenzi. What I was saying was were the comments made by the Swedish guy with regards to the terrible films by the talented in climbing but as dull as ditchwater and less gangsta than me guys regarded as a rant or mere observation?

It was on a blog.  The interview contained a number of sensible opinions expressed in a, uhm, outspoken way—but most of it is of local interest only.  Your swedish is perhaps a bit rusty anyway?

Dense, I think that it is a bit of a rant because I see people appropriating language and mannerisms all the time and its just part of contemporary culture. I don't think its pretending you are a gangsta rapper or that you grew up in Compton, it just amuses those who indulge in it.

As to the question about what sort of personality these climbers may or may not have, I have no idea. I never saw the vid in question, but they are all a bit like that, and I am very happy to take your word for it that this particular offering was dull as ditchwater.

when Dense said "ditchwater", I'm sure he meant the bit of water in the bottom of the LA storm drains that shoots up in a sheet of silver when you drive a police car through it really really fast - obviously, when there is no car present, the water is pretty dull - to some people it is still pretty cool

Dull ditch water

"Cool" ditch with tags and stuff

Some use of ironic gangsta speak is/was funny. The trouble with irony is that it wears off quickly and you end up becoming that which you were satirising.

To be fair I reckon most the the longrunning ironic faux-gansta patois on this forum from the early days hasn't been prevalent for maybe the last half decade.

Dave touches on the problem. He's a dyed-in-the-wool bona-fide original rude boy so his gangsterisms are accepted, because that's always been Dave, but these new kids on the block just don't get it, nothing original about them. Word.

I experienced a nasty dose of this when "Awesome" moved from it's ironic home in the phrase "Awesome Wednesdays" (down the Awesome Wall, Stockport) to populate my everyday vocabulary.

It got embarrassing, but it's really hard to stop once you've got going  :wall:

Hmmmm, v. interesting foot-age of the fleet foot idiot from 'the Gown' ... one is surprised one has not crunched into him yet.
Breakfast?  Kidneys ... he didn't seem to want them, lucky for him his opponent was so humble.
Boxing?  The difference between Desmond and Tutu?  There's a point!
Lucky for I i've got a fight Monday night .... down't DCgym ... or somewhere in town.
What to do?
Personally i'll like to see Rik Simpleton in the ring with Fatima Whitbread (- that's the clue for dem dat knows)...
Bless you monsieur Bart ... bon chance.

PS Jibe you're quite write about what we right ... so better to say nothing ?
