Ilkley Ringpiece Broken

Went out to try this gritstone classic for the first time today, only to find the ringpiece hold had been snapped off! There is still a good hold on the left side of where the handle had broken off, but it is extremely crumbly where the handle use to be. Still managed to complete by avoiding the damaged area by positioning right hand on crimp below and left hand on the left side of the snapped hold. This is a bit of a double dyno, still a great line.

Shame, it was a great hold.

Wonder if it was busted by climbers, or youths dicking about? First I've heard of it.

I was there on sunday and it was broken, i was told it was done in the past couple of weeks when someone was topping out and standing on it.

Here's the vid of it now, i don't think its any harder, it will be if the hold isnt stablised as its very crumbly.

before Jasper points it out...

I am a fat bastard, I was in Ilkley the other week and I did pull on the slopers to the right of Ringpiece

I didn't touch the ring pull, or even look at it funny

I made no observations that could falsify statements about its existence at that time

I'm sure (I know!) there are some medical types on here who would know exactly what to re-name it as ;)

Perineal Tear - having been blamed for a couple of these, I know what they look like and they look like the feature on the back of The Calf

someone is probably going round saying "I tore The Calf a new arsehole last week"

I also feel your pain there, mine wont stick either! All the rest of it is pretty steady...or was at least before the ring broke! Haven't been too look at it since it broke. TBH it was pretty sandy and when working it I did think it look questionable.

Any thoughts on doing anything to preserve what's left with the stump? I know some things were tried at bridestones etc in the past. It's super crumbly now but it's still such a great problem despite the famous hold.

Before anyone says anything, I am not going to do anything to it. I wouldn't know what to do.

So. Is it in anyone's interest to do anything or do we leave it?
