Wet week in font… what to do?
May 16, 2012, 11:32:47 am
Just looking for a bit of advice. Off to Font on Saturday for a week and the forecast is rubbish, showers or heavy rain every day. Any recommendations of areas that dry quickly? Anything else worth doing there in the rain? Is there an indoor bouldering wall nearby as a last resort?
Cheers

Probably worth trying the search function?  ;)

Some info here: http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,8304.msg125709.html#msg125709

There is an indoor place at Buthiers which forms part of the leisure centre

The wall at Buthiers looks like a leading wall.

http://www.clubalpin-idf.com/escalade/mur.html  all the local walls round Paris
http://www.indoorclimbing.com/france.html all the walls in France with a bit more info

If you want to stop on the way down or bail early, there is a good little bouldering wall near lille.

Will be in Font from thursday so hoping the weather isnt as bad as predicted  :please:

Thanks for the info, hoping we don’t need it but good to know just in case. Enjoy your trip, hope the rain stays away.

Forum search function isn't great, best option is using Google to do a site specific search of the ukbouldering.com domain.

A long way to come for walls but 2 new wall for the Paris area, the first near La Défense opened last week (I'll have a look when I'm back from the U.K). Plus Block'out are opening a new centre in St Ouen in July which if the smaller one is anything to go by will be excellent. Competition at last.

I almost cancelled a trip to font based on the fact that a guy who was working with us said it was going to rain there all week. He was a meteorology lecturer from the uni of Birmingham. It was the best week of weather I'd ever had, and still have had to date. Long range forecasts aren't worth reading.
The locks on the seine at bois le rois are interesting for half and hour with a roule from the village.
Orleans is nice but takes ages on rubbish roads.
Enjoy your holiday

I was out over Easter and my mate from Paris kept saying that the weather was going to sh*t according to his forecast. I was using http://www.yr.no/place/France/%C3%8Ele-de-France/Fontainebleau/long.html and it was bang on.

Doesn't look so bad?

Save problems that dry in an instant e.g. L'Angle Bens @ Isatis for those showery days.

as tom said just find areas and problems that dry quickly, 95.2, cul de chien, apremont. when i was there lately the boulders went from dripping to dry in 15 minutes with a bit of wind. its one of the best things about font rock imo.

the castle in Font is worth a visit if you're not completely adverse to that kind of thing.
With audio-guide it's a couple hours of sauntering room to room, hall to hall, among really old stuff and immaculately restored interiors.

We walked around the palace today. 2hrs with audio €10pp. No wonder the pheasants revolted, them royals didn't half royally take the piss with the amount of gold gilding in that place.

If any1s interest, boulder shop van at cuvier rents pads and sells jingo wobbly guide book

If you end up at the chateaux, don't forget to take some bread for the sizeable carp in the lake at the back!

Thanks for all the info, such a friendly bunch. Going to stop being so pessimistic and just look forward to it. Long range forecasts are mostly rubbish you’re right, sure we will get plenty of dry spells. Can’t wait.
Cheers

Have been reliably informed they have a boulder wall. However, if it is raining and you like steep rock, check out Calviar (Not sure if that is how it is spelt)

Going to stop being so pessimistic and just look forward to it.

:agree: I was there a few weeks ago and the weather was shit. Still managed to climb on real rock 6 out of 7 days.

From the first post linked on this thread!

Well I'm off to Font on Thursday for 4 days and as per usual the weather is looking a bit iffy - bugger!

So which areas do you rate for wet weather and don't include that shit hole called Calvaire.

No smart Alec responses like bars, ineternet cafes, climbing walls, come on which are the top 5 bets, could be individual routes or areas, anything from 7a - 7c+ will do.Any help would be much appreciated.

I think the all weather roof at Calvair fell down a few years ago?

Neil told me it was fine, though I never did go and check it out for myself the other week.

As others have said, I'd ignore even the short term forecasts. When we went last year they kept predicting rain for the next day so I kept thrashing myself expecting a rest day tomorrow. We had one massive hailstorm and a couple of showers all week and climbed every day.

The climate is much like here, as in completely unpredictable.

I normally do that on my rest days.

We had a week there end of April a few years back, it rained at some point every day (except one, when it was roasting!), but we still climbed every day. Just learn which are quick drying, and which get a bit of shelter and won't get wet if it's raining. And it if it too wet to climb get a raincoat on and do some exploring for future reference. I personally wouldn't go all the way to Font and then climb on a climbing wall, too much of a waste of skin.

It's Europe, we don't have a climate, we just get weather.

(Like last night's snows in Braemar)

What Jasper said. There's always Gorge Aux Chats for when it stops raining!

What Tom said. The red circuit at Gorge aux Chats is really very good.
