Earl / Bridestones
April 05, 2012, 09:11:36 am
Thinking of popping up to either Earl of Bridestones later on today. Anyone know if much snow has fallen up them parts?

Cheers,
Bernardo

No idea of actual conditions, but if there's any doubt Earl will be a better bet than Bridestones.

There was a fair bit of snow round Skipton yesterday morning, but it had mostly cleared by the evening. My guess would be that Earl could still be a bit wet - snow melt run-off from the top. I'd guess there will be some dry bits, just not sure how extensive. If it's been wet, Bridestones is best avoided. The rock is fragile even when it's dry!

Sat in bed eating breakfast looking out of the window across at the bridestones hill it looks like there will be some snow on the ground up there. I'd imagine the rock would be climbable but still damp so best avoided. TBH Bridies is best avoided at all times now, it's pretty trashed and a shadow of its former self.
I'd guess Earl would be much the same so should offer up some good climbing.

Widdop might be a good alternative?

I drove past Earl yesterday afternoon - it had a decent dusting of snow.  From my office in Ilkley I can see it's still lingering on the high ground so I imagine Earl will be pretty seepy (some of the more windswept aretes might be dryish but it would be potluck).

I'd have thought something more south facing would be a better bet. In that area Scout Crag could be a good bet. Haven't been but it looks good.

Thanks for the replies, I'm with Nik in that Bridestones is to be avoided when damp.  Looking at todays forecast though I'd expect Bridestones to be dry later on today if it only had a light dusting of snow.

I can imagine Widdop would be a touch damp.

I'll probably head to up Earl anyhows as that was my preferrence and its sounds like it may be worth a look.

If you're still interested, I'm there now and it's mostly all dry and in good condition.
