Good venues close to stations
February 15, 2012, 11:23:14 am
I was wondering if anyone knows of bouldering areas that are close to a train station either in the Peaks or Lancashire. Best bet I have found so far is Hathersage then walking to Stanage any other ideas?

Train to Sheffield then the 272 bus (Sheffield <-> Castleton) will get you to Burbage South/Secret Garden/Mother Cap/Over Owler Tor/Millstone.  Its not too far to walk round to Burbage North/West/Higgar Tor or even on to Stanage Apparent North and then Plantation.

Saves walking up the hill from Hathersage at least!

I was without a car for 12 months living in central Manchester a few years back and I used to use public transport as follows, which worked well if you don't mind a bit of walking.

Train to Widnes - 25 min walk to Pex
Bus to Hobson moor - 5 min walk
Bus/Train to Greenfield - 15/30min walk to Wimberry
Train to Grindleford -  30-40 min walk to Burbage South / Secret Garden / Millstone / Froggatt (plus one time I walked all the way to Curbar)

The obvious one that springs to mind is Mossatrocity, a classic 7c which is only a couple of hundred metres flat walk from Grindleford station. Not much to warm up on though.
Also from Grindleford it's not too far to Yarncliffe, Lawrencefield, Millstone, Secret Garden etc.

Depends where in Lancashire, but I used to get the train to Trowbarrow from Lancaster (10/15 mins from Silverdale station). You can get to Woodwell from the same station, but a bit more of a walk.

Other than that, we always used to get the train to Grindleford/Hathersage and walk up to Froggatt/Millstone/Secret Garden, etc.

Where are you based?

Some options in Yorkshire too, notably Ilkley and Shipley Glen.
