Brunei
February 27, 2012, 05:01:24 pm
I have the opportunity, or possibly threat, of doing some work here.

Anyone been?  I presume it is completely worthless from a climbing perspective.  Anything else of interest?

A friend of mine I met travelling thinks this of Brunei.

"Brunei
If this were a town in Scotland, it'd be Irvine: a place that no one really knows much about, and rarely bothers to explore. On doing so, they are unanimously disappointed. Absolutely no reason for anyone other than recovering alcoholics and/or junkies to visit. Avoid"

Nowt in Sabah to my knowledge but there is some stuff close. Batu Lawi is an amazing jungle tower not too far away in Sarawak as made famous by Sam Ligtning Juniors book, 'all elevations unknown'

Also, in Kota Kinabalu (half and hour flight from Brunei) there is climbing on the mountain but also now a climbing wall my bro designed and built. They have also been developing a island off the coast woth over 900 bolts in cliffs with routes ranging form pedestrian to about 7c i think.

Facebook pages        http://www.facebook.com/#!/climbsabah

or web page:     http://www.sicc.com.my/SABAH_INDOOR_CLIMBING_CENTRE/Home_page.html
google searches find it. Could be worth a look if at least just to meet some people

Good luck, i love it out there and you get to use the free theme park

Just occasionally ...

@duncan: a Japanese climbing friend (geologist) is currently working close to Brunei in the adjacent bit of Malaysia. I am sure he would be psyched to meet up to find some climbing. The Malaysia guidebook lists various options around there.

Thanks all.  So perhaps not quite as hopeless as might be imagined.  It does sound a bit leech-tastic though.

That good eh?  I guess I wasn't expecting Harlem in the 1920s.

I believe the sultan is taller, better looking but not quite as rich.

That's in Sabah, unless I'm missing something.

I've done some stuff on Mount Kinabalu. Some good trad on generally decent rock, and tons of new stuff to do, but I had to jump through some beaurocratic hoops with officials in Kota Kinabalu to get permission to be up there without a guide.

i meant to say nowt in Brunei sorry.
Lots in sabah including the stuff on the mountain and the island berhala i think it is called.

There is also stuff near Kuching in Sarawak. I did develop a boulder next to a river in central sarawak about a days walk for Bario. a good 7a above crocodile infested water next to a bullet ant nest and leech festooned trees.

That's got to be a contender for the best problem description ever.

If loose rock was added to the description, Mick Fowler would be packing his bags, dreaming of "unjustifiable" routes and Garry Gibson would be running through a departure lounge clutching his drill.

Add "sit start to a low traverse" and I'd be there like a shot... ;)

guys, the days walk in is for someone jungle fit! dont forget that the barbs on the rattan would slice the pad to pieces. When i walked there i ended up with trench foot!

it was a 3 start problem though and there was a 6a and 6b+ ish to warm up on. Sitter possible!

Should imagine the crocs would give good motivation, when making the sit start...
