The radio 4 piece Bonjoy mentions, I remember now, did say something like 20 mins (ish) of sunshine a day can be enough to produce vitamin D. However it did mention that the sun doesn't get high enough in the sky in winter to enable the body to produce vitamin D. The body can only produce vitamin D when the sun is high in sky and the body can build up stores of D during the summer ready for winter.

So there is no wonder children are becoming deficient of vitamin D if they're either indoors or covered in sunblock when the sun is at it's highest.

So will smokers have higher levels of vitD than non smokers since the smoking ban? ;)

Lunchtime walks are a must any time of year for many good reasons..

Not least of which is our city park may disappear under a concrete precinct soon! http://www.friendsofutg.co.uk/

(I hope Ian Woods just keeps his bloody money!)

I like the idea, but what happens once we're past the Equinox? Have you got black-out curtains or what?

Yes, blackout curtains. Keeping a regular sleeping pattern most of the time with the curtains and the clock works far better for me than trying to follow the light over the year.

I have one of the sunrise alarm clocks and it's been a total life changer, I struggle to get out of bed far less in the winter now whereas before I regularly felt like crying after being jerked awake by a regular alarm in the pitch black.  I have black out blinds but even in the height of summer the sun rarely wakens me early due to window position, and the fact I live in Glasgow where we don't really get sun. :)

Does nobody remember the episode of The Good Life where they tried getting up and going to sleep with the sunrise and set?

I'm going to get one of those clocks. I'm pretty crap at being woken up by a normal alarm in the pitch dark but Mrs S is even worse. Gotta be a wise investment.

Was it only me who fancied Penelope Keith?

go for the quality light alarms - I've test driven 2 cheap one's and they aren't worth buying

we've got this, it's ace

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lumie-Bodyclock-Advanced-Wake-up-Light/dp/B000WE54B4/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1328101168&sr=8-12

solid and stable so even I can't knock it off the table

All this talk of alarm clocks is a bit of puzzle.
All you need is to get older then you spend half the night getting up for a piss before completely waking up about half past four and just laying there till its time to get up. I haven't needed an alarm clock for years.

lagers - do you mean that cheaper Lumie one (linked above) was no good cos the reviews say it's fine and ebay's got some going for £30ish?

I say it's fine too. If it had a radio the wife would only force radio 4 news at me. I need to be awake for that.

I've obviously missed out on Ms Kendal's bottom, I'm fairly sure I'm not missing anything with Ms Keith's. Do you like the stern ones Jasper?

Edit: to link this for cheaper light alarms

I like the idea of these light alarms but I'd be worried they wouldn't actually wake me up.  I can fall asleep with the curtains open and still sleep past lunchtime.  As much as I hate the horror or waking up to an ear splitting racket sometimes anything less just won't do the job.
