Timber!!!
January 08, 2012, 07:00:12 pm
I doubt there will be many here who frequent this particular crag, but a huge tree came down from above the riverside buttress at Wildcat Crags today, fortunately no one was climbing under it otherwise they'd have been stretchered out.  Routes still climbable (we'd been planning on heading there anyway, arrived to find the cause of the huge noise we were wondering as to the origins), but ledges are dirty and the abseil tree has gone.  Afraid I've no reference for the routes/buttress as was using a mates old guide and didn't note down what routes we did.

Is that second photo anywhere you might land on it? Ouch.

The wood that came down did hit the base of the wall and even removed a chunk of rock.  Its possible to walk about the base and we threw/rolled some of the crap further away but its pretty messy.

None of the routes are that hard (I think the hardest is HVS), but you'd want to avoid coming off from low-down as landing in the current mess would indeed be uncomfortable.

Woah!

I'm trying to picture which bit of the crag this is. Which routes is it near Slackers?

Have now found out the names of the routes and its the buttress with Cracker Jack and Long Route on.  One of the trees that was taken out was the one at the top of Cracker Jack that you used to be able to abseil off.

I wonder if it would have made a sound if you weren't there?
