Dartmoor Conditions
December 28, 2011, 04:55:09 pm
Does anyone out there know what the weather's been like on Dartmoor of late?
I've got my annual free day while visiting family over the festive period tomorrow and a hankering for some exfoliation on The Moor. Does anyone have any knowledge on where would be a good bet?
The alternative is esoteric Somerset boulders, so I'm happy to risk a wasted journey!

Managed to get out today and conditions were pretty good amidst the showers.  Similar sort of forecast for tomorrow I think.  It was bitterly cold in the wind though!

Cheers JonI.
I took the punt but it was pretty wild and wet up there so ended up in TCA in Bristol.  The Wave at Bonehill was dry but catching the full force of the wind.  Next time...

Resurrection after 10 years...

Any locals care to comment on connies in the shire atm? Was planning to come down for a look at Leigh tor (inspired by Brutus' best of 2021) But Bristol is covered in clag this morning. Would I be wasting the drive?

In Torquay and tied to work, but it’s bright blue skies and ~1⁰C, so seems like it’s worth the drive from here. Was out on Hound Tor on Sunday and apart from deep mud everywhere (probably frozen today), it wasn’t bad.

Hi Duma.  It is the mintiest of mintiness in the Shire today.  Blue skies and sunshine at last!  The Prow dries quickly.
Have a good one.  Hoping to get out myself later on today.

I think degree of lank or a big span helps... I haven't done it, although I have witnessed it but I can't remember a thing, sorry.
Mikey did it from sitting under the roof, him and Tom Bunn also did a direct sitting under the roof and going direct up crimps right of the arete.

Worked something out, doesn't really get out to the prow, but was certainly worth 7B, logical, and good moves. Basically from sitting on the block, big span out to the lip with RH, then hard moves on crimps up the wall above.

Missed this Duma..   That is the line that Mikey and Bunny did, seemed logical.  I think Gym Monkey links the crimps to the prow/arete but didn't start on the block underneath, although the beis also linked it from there.  None of this got recorded of course.  I'll push Mikey to name and claim next time I see him.

Cheers Grant, that makes sense. Odd the guide has it as a sit. Reckon would be harder than 7B to get out to the prow from a sit, and a bit forced.

As promised more information!

The write up for Gym Monkey in the guide is wrong...  It was never a sit. Gym Monkey starts on the right of the lip and traverses leftwards through lower crimps to reach the prow/arete. Given 7b from this start.

It is possible to start on the block underneath the roof, span to the lip and finish up the arete as per Gym Monkey = Gym Monkey Sit 7b+

Or start on the block underneath the roof, span to the lip and finish directly up crimps = Ice Cream Sunday 7b+

Feel free to add to UKC log if you feel so inclined Duma.

I went there several years ago with Mikey C and Tom Bunn, MC flashed the Prow, did Gym Monkey pretty quick, then linked that from under the roof and did Ice Cream Sunday followed swiftly by Bunny.

Just to keep this on topic the moorland conditions have been excellent this past week but the dry spell looks to be ending Thursday.
