Avertical World - Dundee.
July 08, 2007, 12:13:04 am
Anyone been to Avertical World, Dundee? Working on Open Golf wk after nxt and staying at Dundee uni. Given recent weather and the fact I'm flying up don't anticipate taking my pad. Is it worth taking my shoes for some indoorism? How much per session? What's the bouldering like there? Is it close to the uni. What nights does it get really busy etc. All the usual questions about indoor venues really.

All knowledge appreciated as I can't open avertical's webpage on my blackberry and don't have a computer.

Cheers

Can't remember prices as it's been a while since I was down,. but it's the usual, around the £6 mark. Bouldering is pretty good; old cave with vertical side walls and steep panels up middle, and new cave with steep section, vertical walls and roof section. I have no idea where Uni is, but it's not far from city centre, and well signposted from most access points to the city. Problems are pretty well set, Dave Mac and Nial Mc set them in the new cave when it was first opened, not sure if they have been reset since then, but generally they are of a reasonable standard, enough for a session or two. This time of year it's normally weather dependant, but like most walls Tuesdays and Thursdays are busiest, althought the bouldering never gets too crowded, especially with the new walls in Aberdeen.

If the weather is dry, however, I strongly urge you to make use of this  http://www.scottishclimbs.com/wiki/Glen_Clova_Bouldering you can easily get there in about an hour from Dundee. Could possibly give you an evening tour, pm me your details.

Bugger, just noticed you said you were flying. Wonder if there's a bus to Kirriemuir? Might be worth seeing if you can get a lift withsomeone from the wall, quite a few folk from Dundee head out to Clova on evenings.

Hey, good beta from our man north o the border! Cheers for info mate. Yeah, sadly am flying up so without wheels and pad. Think we're bussed back and forth twixt Carnoustie and Dundee uni. Going to be quite full on long days too, but hopefully I'll manage to get to Avertical one or two nights for an hour or so. Need to keep in shape on the off chance summer ever reappears down here. Thanks again, dude.

Full on days on a golf course? Is this possible?

Glad to be of assistance.

Sadly yes as we have to provide coverage of every single player that comes through! I'm on 16th Green so one of the last to knock off. Bring on those midges!

Cheers.

Unlikely to be many midges, they aren't prolific on the east coast unless you are in a very sheltered spot on a damp warm day i.e. not a links course.

I would get a headnet just in case though.

Aye, bouldering is a bit limited but it'll keep you occupied for an evening.

I'd say come up to Transition in Aberdeen if you fancy a change, but the bouldering isn't really much better.

Cheers, I'm in Edinburgh today, aberdeen tomorrow, then Edinburgh again on Thursday so I'd plumped for Dundee as being kind of inbetween. I might give transitions a go tomorrow after work before driving down the road to Dundee.

Never mind - you're not missing much unless climbing with a fat, weak, old, miserable, English punter inspires you. I do have a good line in excuses though.
