Fibreglass/Resin kits for making volumes
October 28, 2011, 12:01:38 pm
Anyone with any experience of making fibreglass volumes care to recommend the best tools for the job?
Is there a particular kit/brand of matting and resin that are commonly used?

Any other general tips also appreciated. Been wanting to experiment for a while, and recently have the space and time to actually have a go.

These guys sell everything you might need and are cheap.

They also deliver very quickly in my experience.

In the absence of a volume makers manual, here's the general sketch.

Find a thing. Cover it in clingfilm. Laminate a load of glass fibre mat over the top of it. When you're done, chuck a load of kiln-dried sand at it before the resin goes off. Try and get your resinous mess off the thing you tried to laminate over. Realise that using your wife's tupperware as a mould was a bad idea. Paint your volume, and screw it onto a wall. Bear down.

Simple.

Glassplies used to be good for this sort of thing. Don't over catalyse your resin - it sets on fire.

Hi. I used epoxy and standard 6oz woven f/glass. Bond polystyrene to a sheet of plywood. Sand/shape the ps. Lay vacuum bagging release film over the ps. Lay cloth and satrurate with resin. Cover in vacuum bagging film and pull a vacuum. Super strong no viods. Sand and paint with sandtex. Good luck.
