Hello,
MrsTT wants to get away for a weekend in sunny mid November.. And I've been tasked with locating a decent quality b&b (I'd prefer pub based/pub right next door) in the south/mid lakes... Any reccomendations? You get the picture, log fire, good pint, nice grub, decent room etc.. I want to avoid the main honeypot sites (Ambleside/Windermere etc,,) and the parents live in Kendal so not there... West/north lakes is probably out as its a wee bit too far to travel..

I had an excellent night at a pub called The Plough at Wigglesworth, just on the edge of the Trough of Bowland (http://www.theploughatwigglesworth.co.uk/), very nice room, great hosts, Landlord and other good ale, and they really pulled out the stops to do an excellent vegan meal. The regular menu looked very good. Great spot to explore the Trough if you don't know it. Highly recommended.

ps. I know you said B&B not pub but this is pretty swanky and doesn't feel pubby.

Ah, well then this place fits the bill nicely. Quiet and out the way, you could even sneak in a quick hour at Thorn? Obviously its not really the Lakes.

Lovely walk round Silverdale, looked at gopping Woodwell; at least I know where it is now.

TT the Brit is in Elterwater at the eastern end of Langdale, quite close to Ambleside, but not in the town.  Good food and normally an excellent selection of guest ales, but I've not stayed there.  Also 5 mins drive from Langdale boulders http://www.britinn.co.uk/

The Skelwith Bridge is a bit more swanky, have stayed a couple of times for special occasions; rooms are very good, main restaurant is a bit on the stuffy/posh side, but food is very good.  The connected Talbot Bar and does proper pub grub and good beer. http://www.skelwithbridgehotel.co.uk/

Drunken duck is lovely. Have eaten there the last two times we have been. Gets booked up well early though - for rooms i mean, so book sooner rather than later. Bit shit if you dont stay because you have to drive to wherever you are staying. Its on its own - sort of near hawkshead.

Stubbs - food at skelwith bridge was good, but room a bit shit I thought.

Finally, when we got engaged we stayed at linthwaite howe. Very nice. Nice rooms, nice food and she even proposed, so possible inference of mind altering hallucinogens in the air conditioning.

Used to go to the ducky as a yoot with my parents back when it was less gastro, looks dead posh now, but the menu sounds good.

Dob, I guess it might be luck of the draw with rooms at the Skelwith, although we may have gone for a deluxe room or whatever on a deal.

Drunken Duck is a lot different to what it used to be like, all poshed up and gastro now. Outgate pub between there and Hawkshead is nice and quiet.

Some good suggestions from Stubbs, the Langdale Hotel is very nice but expensive, Wainright pub just up the road plus near the boulders. Britannia at Elterwater nice too.

There's the New/Old Dungeon Ghyll hotels as well, but not sure if the ODG bar would go down well with the missus!

Thanks for the Langdale suggestions - but I've been there (Langdale) many many times, ODG, NDG, Wainwrights etc.. (though never stayed anywhere other than camping/bunkbarn) so fancy trying some where else..

I know you said not west, but it's way quieter and I can suggest three possibles which are top notch and fairly accessible.

With the first two the emphasis is more on the B & B rather than pub. Lorton is dead easy to get to via the A66 and over the Whinlatter Pass. The Pheasant is right on the A66 opposite Bassenthwaite.

http://newhouse-farm.com/ Just had B & B here (wedding night!) but Hazel does dinner too. You could get a taxi to the Kirkstile in Loweswater (best pub in the Lakes http://www.kirkstile.com/).

The one in ings is quite near a road but has its own micro brewery. Near to kendal too. Can't rememberb its name. Beers all dog related I remember.
