I can see a theme here

For sale one champagne cork, a gift from the lovely Sandine Levet when she won both the bouldering and lead events at the World Cup in Ratho 2003.

Hit me on the cheek when she popped her cork at the end. Dangerous thing being a photographer, still she gave me a swig of the champers so all good.

I can probably score some consecrated grit from either of Sheffield's cathedrals if anyone's in the market for that stuff.

I heard that scrapings from masonic gravestones can help with headpointing (only as part of a calorie controlled diet).

Now I have a bit of Right Unconquerable as it happens. I fell off it,  then it fell off it.  Rumours were of someone using a car jack to release a friend at the time. Anyway someone gave me a bit of the flake  to cement my ineptitude. Can't see it having value on the open market though.

Depends which part of it you rub, and what you rub it with.

Partheon/ian can be spelled both ways.  As for the route, wasn't it spelled Partheon in the Big Issue?

Well you can spell it both correctly ('Parthian') and incorrectly ('Partheon') so that's sort of two ways, although there's potential for more variation on the latter.

The route is 'Partheon Shot' though - because that's what John called it.

I'm pretty sure it's Parthian, reference to the Parthian's tactic of shooting backwards while retreating.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parthian_shot

And just about every reference to the route on the 'net, and every guidebook I've ever seen.

edit - except his website?? Is something I have believed for so long wrong?? I'm all flustered now.

Let's not let such a minor detail stand in the way of wanton pedantry.

I think you will find that Partheon Shot is a subtle play on Parthian and Pantheon: thus it is both a Parthian Shot i.e. a telling blow by John to his critics even as he was leaving the field and a "shot" at entering the Pantheon of  the climbing gods by making such a bold ascent.

"Occam's" and "razor"

Which in itself is strange as the principle, even if it wasn't his idea, is commonly attributed to William of Ockham (Wikipedia redirects "Ockham's razor" to "Occam's razor" though, should really be the other way round).

Ah but Jon you forget John's extensive classical education combined with the honing of his wit in that mid-eighties crucible rapier repartee that was the Malham Cat Walk.

Sadly I believe his learning was too frequently disturbed by the sound of a continually ringing trim-phone, so I'm sticking with the original theory.
