Hacking into a Mac
June 08, 2011, 08:17:20 am
I've just managed to get my greasy mitts on a bargain mac g5 , lovely machine , only problem is it that some of it's features are still protected by a password ...... I've contacted the seller and he's not prepared to give me old password/security settings ....... Does anyone know of any way of getting round this ? ...... Thanks

I don't know anything about Macs but I did see something about the new OS being out soon and costing about £20. So surely you should be able to pick up a copy of the current one for a couple of fuck alls?

you can buy os 10.4 on ebay pretty cheap as it is an old os. a g5 won't get on with anything newer as it is power pc as opposed to intel in newer models.

better still get hold of some original g5 start up discs and then you'll get al the bundled software.

os 10.4

Lion comes out in July and will be £20 upgrade from the App Store. You'll no doubt need an admin password to install it though.

You're going to need an OS disc from somewhere so that you can boot straight from that -- there's a master password reset util on there -- even if it's one which you burn yourself for the time being. Then update to Lion next month.

Also try this but make sure you read the disclaimer at the bottom;

Lion will NOT install on  a power pc. 10.4 is the last os that will run on a G5

Just get on ebay mate for os discs. What is still protected, have you looked at the user accounts prior to posting (in the system preferences).?

I agree, although you could of course install a free OS and pay less than a few fuck alls.

Slackers, I think we need to do a search of ukb and correlate the abscence of 'os' 'linux' and 'm$' with your holidays ;)

If you have another machine download the OS from a torrent site and burn to a DVD. Apple don't have license keys which I'm assuming is something to do with having already payed for their hardware if your using their OS. Depends on your ethics.

10.5 (Leopard) works on PPCs (http://support.apple.com/kb/SP517). 10.6 (Snow Leopard) was when OS X went intel only.

If you install 10.4 you couldn't connect an iPhone 4 or iPad 2 (both of which require OS X v10.5.8 or later) and if you're going to the trouble of obtaining an old version of OS X you might as well get the one that support for is likely to last the longest...

Whilst the point about support is a good one I doubt gc is ever likely to want to connect an iphone 4 or ipad 2 to his machine......

It sounds as though this works fine though, its simply a privilege issue due to not having the root/admin password.

Read about that the other day, he only got his Mac back after he started blogging as the police had mis-filed the report under "no leads" despite the fact he made it clear to the interviewing officer that he had all this software tracking things.

That said a G5 is a fair old size, and not as lift-able as laptops for those with sticky fingers (thats not discounting the possibility it is hot though).

Be a bit careful getting 2nd hand startup discs - they need to be for exactly the same machine. We have 2 macbooks, bought 6 months apart (one came with 10.4, the other with 10.5)  and the start up discs are not interchangeable. There's some copy protect thing on  them or something.
