Low grade bolt clipping
June 08, 2011, 09:03:14 am
A friend's sister and husband are coming over from Italy and are going to the peak and hoping to get a days climbing in.  They want to clip bolts and I think there max grade is 6a.  Am I best to suggest horseshoe quarry or harper hill?  Any other worth while venues?

Tell them to expect to be disappointed. Unless they come from somewhere in Italy where climbing it shitty quarries is commonplace.

Yeah I tried to to get them to head to Portland but apparently they are stopping in the peak for 2 days on the way down from Newcastle to London.  I even suggested top roping on the grit just to get them away from the shit venues but they seem quite keen for limestone.  I should be meeting them tonight of tomorrow so will try and knock some sense into them  :chair:

Portland is indeed a good venue 6b-7b+.

Take them to the Tor instead and get them motivated to train ;)

There are some bolted routes on the right wing of High Tor that start at around 6a. However, a lot of the routes aren't all that good/solid. There are a couple of good lines though (No. 17).

Frankly I think they're likely to be disapointed.

I take it they have no trad gear or experience and that you won't be with them? Taking them up some of the 3* E1's at Chee Tor or High Tor would likely be a lot more pleasurable than any of the bolted stuff.

Harpur Hill, Smalldale and Blackwell Halt (top end of Cheedale) might be the best of a pretty rum bunch.

No I won't be there unfortunately and from what my friend says it doesn't look like they have any trad experience.  I'll check with them about if they can set up top rope anchors and lend them some long slings to get them to go to stanage.  Failing that I'll send them to Harpur Hill.  I'll use the arguement that if I went to Italy I'll be eating pizza and pasta not chips and yorkshire puddings!
