Which memory card?
May 15, 2011, 04:11:40 pm
Hi there,

I'm getting myself a Canon 550D and need to get a memory card. I'll be using the camera for HD filming as much as taking stills. I don't know how badly HD footage saps your memory, was thinking an 8gig or 16gig SD card to be able to hold all the footage and not lose any whilst converting files. Just wondering if 8gig's will be enough as 16 sounds pretty excessive? Also, the MB/s. Is that just the speed of transferring files over to the pc? It seems to make a large difference to the price! Thanks in advance.

Might as well say hi too seeing as this is my first post

You can find me wearing a big old blue, sherpa jacket. Often sat under demon wall because it's raining. Not that I can't do it or anything..

Cheers

I think this was covered quite well in the HD DSLR thread previously.

I've got a 550d and a 4gb class 4 card which works fine, but this is where it gets complex; in testing some class 4-6 cards outperform class 10. I'm pretty sure there's a list of cards on the 550d flickr group/ and or HV20.com DSLR section. If the card isn't quick enough, your buffer fills up and it stops writing (I think it takes about 12 seconds on the 550)!

If I was into filming 4gb would be pretty limiting as it fills up fast! Also, it rips through batteries. Any reason why you're going for the 550d specifically? The few additions to the 60 and 600d are pretty useful (micro adjustment being one, canon flash technology another).

Before you buy I'd also look very carefully at which brand you're buying into. They each have their pro's and con's.

Yes, i'd definitely want a card larger than 4gb. I'll have to find out how quick the cards are of others who use film often. Not sure I like the idea of buffering problems.

I'm pretty new to photography and the 550D seems like a great buy for high end consumer DSLR's. Asking in store and looking at dpreview I think that the 550D offers everything i'll need. The 60D and 600D are more expensive, ever slightly larger/heavier and the differences they offer don't really sway my decision. As said, i'm pretty amateur and need to learn how to use an SLR first as i've never owned one. I'd rather spend the extra money on a good quality lens as they hold their value a lot more.

I've been using a Canon G10 for a few years now and it's been great. I'm very happy with the product and the user interface is pretty much the same as the DSLR range. I've had a good handle of different cameras in store and really liked the 550. For me it just seems the most sensible/ best buy.

Sorry if this has already been discusses in another thread

Yeah I was looking at getting a class 6. 20MB/s and 16gb. After a bit of looking it seems as though it's not really recommended to get anything less than 20MB/s for filming and DSLR's are pretty needy. 8gigs will get you about 40mins filming and 16gigs 80mins. My other thought was to get 2 8gig cards as I doubt i'll exceed 40mins of filming (depends how long it takes my subjects to send something :whip:). Also means if one breaks i'm not left with nothing. I'll have the same amount of space, but transferring stuff will be easier/ quicker and it just means I have to keep an eye out on how much space is left if i'm filming for a while.

You might find you'll not have enough battery for 40 min of filming. They chew up the juice...

I have a Sandisk Extreme C6 8GB and a Transend C10 16GB both seem very happy filming in HD in my D3100.  :great:

Further, and I don't know about the Cannons, but my D90 will film a maximum of 5minutes video before the shutter will drop back down to prevent CCD sensor getting too hot (although I realise you likely have little intention of filming continuously for 40minutes, you might have a setup going for more than 5)..

I searched around for the cheapest (what I thought were) highest speed cards and got 2 x 8GB cards Class 10 for £7.35 each. Was about same price as one 16GB card so figured this guarded against one card failing.
Brand is Transcend (from gomemory.co.uk) which I had not heard of, but so much cheaper than Sandisk it was worth a go, and they've been great taking raw shots on a GF1.
I didn't even consider that

I figured class 10 is class 10  but read a grand total of zero reviews.

<Edit> Sandisk (and others?) now do speeds beyond class 10. The new proextreme is 45MB/s but you pay for it!

Thanks for the replies so far guys. I seem to remember reading that a 550D will just stop after 12 mins of consecutive filming. I've been watching the tutorials about DSLR's on Vimeo (can't stand the two people speaking) but they've been helpful on the basics.

Vincent Laforet Intro to HD DSLR is worth a watch. His blog and other associated videos are also worth a browse.
