Dislocated fingers
September 13, 2005, 11:03:26 am
My 6 monthly injury has come round again, although this time i dont think it requires major surgery. :-)

Anyone had a dislocated finger?

I managed to leave my index finger behind in a finger jam when falling off a desperate roof crack in jersey last week and it bent off at the second knuckle.  It went back in fine and settled down, and i can climb again, but it feels a bit weird (unstable) and a tiny bit tender.  Probably snapped the ligament as i can wobble it lots but it doesnt come out again.  Giving myself physio, anyone got any suggestions or experiences of this?

Pretty sure I've managed to dislocate both little fingers crimping - the one on my left hand is now set in a rather gimpish crooked and bent shape - my advice - don't do as I did (which was nothing) - make sure you get plenty of physio on it to maintain shape and flexibility.

You are rather injury prone aren't you?!

I just wish I was a little more talented then I wouldn't have to try so hard.

As for the finger, I've dislocated a few playing footy and they settle pretty quick- just treat is like a normal finger injury (a bit of trainers bouldering down the matrix) and it'll be fine. Try to go steady on it for a while though.
Ibuprofen before and after climbing also helps me think I'm uninjured.

I think I had one dislocated for me fighting once when drunk.  It felt fine pulling straight, but hurt like buggery when moved from side to side, so I Gave it the RICE treatment for a while, and swelling went down, then strapped it in one of those figure of eight arrangements, no idea if it helped. It's still a bit oversized around compared to the one on my other hand, about 8 years later.

What's Jersey like btw? Were you doing routes or bouldering?

Jersey is amazing.  No bouldering mind, but awesome routes, i was working there instructing.  A bit like the sennen, but much more of it all round the island. Then bits that are slightly reminiscent of gogarth but on granite.  All one to 2 pitches, generally good rock, but a bit mor traffic in some places wouldnt go a miss.  The weather is awesome, flights are cheap, women are top.

Theres about 1000 routes, mod - E9, from what i tried an E4 version of the asp with an 8 foot roof in it the grades are no soft touch.

Sounds good JR. Thinking of heading down there for a long weekend in the summer for a bit of climbing and surfing. This looks quite cool too http://travelguides.bmibaby.com/sisp/?fx=event&event_id=33023

Dislocated my little finger playing cricket. Anyone know how long to leave it? Can I pull when the swelling goes down or should I rest it?
