Point taken about the ear bit. Hundred notes isn't ridiculously priced is it?
Any of the Shure earphones seem to be good. EC2 up to 4, depending on price range. I have some EC2's for running, and have some good bass surprisingly!

I use a pair of Creative ep 630 for daily use; about a tenner from amazon and afaik from the same factory as the sennheiser cx300 - they look identical bar the logo and don't come with a useless pouch.

I've found Sennheiser CX300s a good balance between price/quality. Be aware of fakes though.

Liking my Monster Lil Jamz in-ear phones very much. Excellent sound, good build quality. My hearing's not up to much but I can't tell any significant difference between these and the missus' mucho expensivo Bose QC3's (they were mine but I gave them to her after I got the Monsters). You should be able to find them for £70 or thereabouts.

Definitely look out for fakes, there are loads about. I like the creatives because, if they are the same gubbins as the sennheisers, who's going to bother faking the cheapo version?

I have bought a few pairs of skullcandy and they have all fallen apart within a couple of weeks.

Now I admit, I'm not particularly careful with then - shoved in pockets and the like.
But I equally dont expect a 25 pound pair of headphones to stop working and fall apart anywhere near that quickly.

For my money I would probably go for the standard ipod headphones rather than try out another potential money sink. Of course it is overpriced gear, but the pairs I have
a) work well enough,
b) havent fallen apart since I got them and
c) dont have silly rubbery bits for me to lose.

which as you may have ascertained - form a large part of my criteria for decent earphones.

Quite cheap and the sound quality is decent and the cable and connectors are tough. After running through my last pair in 6 months I've gone for durability and these seem to have it. We'll see...
