Kennelgarth wall - dinas rock
February 19, 2011, 11:13:55 am
Has anyone been down recently? Not been for a few years but keen to back to try fat cat roof soon. Worth a punt or does it just seep this time of year?
Cheers

Just to liven this thread up, I went down on Monday and it was like a fridge. Really good venue. Only seeping hold was the large starting foothold for Launch Pad.
Just to add, I am a huge fan of the place. It was my first visit on Monday and thought the climbing style is amazing. So many funky heel-toe cams and upside down toe hooks. And not a sharp hold insight -> and on limestone... WTF? So good. Thought Fat Cat was very good. Get on it!

My mate went down today - apparently kennelgarth is soaked!
It'll take a few dry days to sort itself out - can let you know when it's dry!

Still lots of seepage yesterday, bits and pieces dry so managed to get some stuff done after spending ages drying holds. Drip rate seemed to be slowing over the day, hopefully the wall should be better in a day or two with the good forecast.

Anyone know if it'll be worth a shot on Sunday? Been a bit wet this week, but the forecast is looking pretty good from Sat.

Do folk think this crag would be worth a trip on Sunday? Sunny today, sunny tomorrow, didn't rain much yesterday. I've never visited so have no clue as to how much it seeps and don't really want to waste a trip. Thanks for any knowledge!

Judging by the amount of rain we've had in the area in the past week, Id imagine its pretty wet right now. Maybe by Sunday it will be in a better state though.

Was at Dinas Friday and Saturday
Everything left of Fat Cat was dry and climbable but with some dripping seepage but greasy everything to the right was wet.
Fat Cat itself was climbable with the help of some towelage between goes - for the record I got to the last move a lot...
On a side note I was disappointed to find the crimps on Fat Cat stuffed full of wet tissue
It is obvious someone was trying to dry the holds (fair enough) but stuffed the tissue so far it they couldn't get it out again.
It was so bad that when you used the holds you squeezed moisture out.
Also there was a load of bits of tissue (clearly used for drying) scattered under the roof.
I cleared the scattered tissue and dug out the jammed stuff with a knife
I'm pretty hopeful the ukb regulars wouldn't litter or over jam the slots but if there's irregulars lurking please take note.
By the number of non climbers that passed in the two sessions I was there (we didn't see any other climbers) the litter, and the excess chalk/tick marks (another argument I know - for the record I have not problem with ticks so long as the ticker brushes them off after....) is not going to do the image of climbers any favours.
Jammed, soaking tissue is not going to do the rock any good especially if it's stuck there til winter and freezes - use towels instead.
Here endth the sermon....

Main crag was dryer than kennelgarth last weekend but still dripping. I'd say it would be worth a shot though.

Not good today. Bottom of Love of Ivy area was wet. All of Kennelgarth is soaking, except for Monkey Magic crack. Can get some things done if you take a towel. Main crag also pretty bad.

Was there last week, top crag problems like Boy Racer where Dryable! Kennelgarth was wet in patches stuff like Launch Pad and Taylor Made. Had a bit of rain recently so guess that might have got worst.

Tuesday was good. Little bit greasy at kennelgarth. Only thing I saw wet on the walk through was Rob Roy. Didn't go to the main crag. Not sure what the weather has been like since then though... Not very good at judging seepage
Hoping to go Tuesday/Wednesday next week, but it is starting to get cold!

Apologies for hijacking this thread but it seems a sensible place to ask the question.
Access to the main crag - is it generally accessed up the waterfall just past the Kennelgarth wall?
The only time I've been that way looked live the preserve of the canyoniers only!
(I don't fancy the walk round with mats!)
Cheers

Boy racer was climbed last weekend. Like most things there it was wet but dryable with a towel and lots of chalk.

Was down Dinas yesterday.. Kennelgarth wall is dry as far a Fat Cat Roof,, then things become wet. Up top all problems are dry or dry able. Did Jet Blue V9 yesterday and boy racer was a little damp but climbable.

As of Wednesday night, Fat Cat was unclimbably soaked (including the headwall above it) but the left hand side looked a bit better. The main crag bouldering all looked pretty dry/easily dryable
Forecast was for rain today though so that may now be out of date already.

Was there yesterday - main crag AND kennelgarth wall. All dry at Main Crag and looks like it is still drying out so good to go for the rest of the week. Kennelgarth wall was mostly dry, all on the lefthand side bone dry, Fat Cat Roof holds and anything on the right is a touch damp but dryable with towles/tissue and still drying out. Nows the time to go

Have unfinished business before term starts next week but don't fancy a 6 hour round trip if it's going to be wet...

Ok last time I'll ask for a while (promise)
Tomorrow is my absolute last chance to get down for a long while and it looks like it won't rain...
No point doing the big round trip if it's seeping though
If anyone's down or around today then a report would be massively appreciated

Can't speak for as far west as merthyr, but i live on edge of bristol channel, not too far away from second severn crossing
was mixture of rain and mizzle all day yesterday here, often worse over valleys than here.
On the plus side it is trying to brighten up now, with a breeze, but wouldn't put it past it to rain again.
Don't know what dinas is like, seepage, drying time etc, but i would be reluctant to do a 6 hour round trip this way today, unless you have back up venues in mind (forest of Dean sandstone has some big overhangs usually find something dry)

Thursday was a bit seepy in places. The rail under Honey pot was all wet, fat cat holds too, right side starting to seep. Could be worse at the moment as there was a lot of rain on Thursday. Main crag was much drier. However, with nice weather today Kennelgarth could be drying out

It was pretty dry, the right hand side was seeping a bit but the rest was OK. Bit warm for my liking but had a good day.

Used both in the end, yeah. Basically dry, slots on Fat Cat and the odd other hold were a bit wet but dryable. Rained quite a bit today but didn't seem any worse when we left.

Good stuff. Yeah, takes a few days for it to seep through after a dry spell, so if its rained the night before or on the same day its usually good to go.
