Enter the Dragon, Ramshaw
July 28, 2010, 04:11:56 pm
Does anyone know where this Mark Croxall problem goes? Briefly famous a few years ago, it was graded 8a+ the repeated by James Pearson in his downgrading phase, who said it was 7c and not very good. I know it's on the Lower Tier, but I couldn't find anything at that sort of grade that I'd bother to climb in the area I looked.

The staffs guys, Andi and Mark, dismissed it as being totally shit. But they do do that.

which in itself is very funny. shaz wouldn't know a decent problem if it came downstairs in a vest clutching an array of mags that it was on the front cover of  :-*

Haven't got one of your guides to hand to reference it with other probs, but it is at the extreme left hand end of the low slung overhang that forms the lowest tier of the Tierdrop area. It follows a rightwards slanting ramp/arete/rib thing from sitting. I saw James repeat it I think? Anyway, in my opinion having not tried it but felt it up is that it is very shit, verging on being eliminate (or it might be totally eliminate, can't recall perfectly), and never 8a+ in a million years. 7c definately seems more realistic. I'm not surprised you couldn't identify it. Its embarrassing.

which may be true, but he is very good at declaring things as shit which, in the case of this particular problem, seems to amount to the same thing. It's like the old war film cliche (accute): "Well, he's either extremely brave or extremy stupid."

Either way, the general pins a medal on his vest.

I've got a vague memory that Mark did it on the way home from winning the World Cup in Brum - and the grade was partly based on his form. It was certainly around the time. I might have even been there on the day, or around the time. If anyone knows the rough date I'll have a dig in the relevant shoebox.

Despite recently signing up with the Dense school of climbing swanning around the local wall in a vest, I've always considered Shaz a great judge of quality.

same as nigel said, under the little roof on a ramp. always considered a pile of crap(isnt anything you cant do?)(bring on the jokes from dense)
what else would a sitdown start eliminate boulder problem at ramshaw be considered, keep them to the plantation.

re the vest,it must be someone that looks like me going around doing routes after me in a vest with a personal vendetta against my family.my dad used to get accused of wearing a vest in the 70's.he lives in spain now,he has been accused of vest wearing out there.none of it is true.

there is a lot of negative waves about vest wearing. I don't like it one bit.
If you don't wear a vest then you obviously aren't man enough

Have you got a high res pic of that end of the lower tier? I reckon Nige could point it out if the holds are visible.

On the lower tier of Ramshaw. About 2mm right of the line '42' in the 2004 guide or directly beneath the arrow head of '51' in the 2009 guide. A slightly off kilter line on the line drawing in the 1989 guide shows the way too. Just right of the start of OL in the 81 guide. The '51 guide simply describes Ramshaw as 'the peculiar tilit of the rocks has tended to reduce the climing to chimneys and easy traverses between smooth overhangs, although probably some of the intervening buttresses could be forced.'
