I use FolderSync which is half the price and can sync to many other services as well as Dropbox.

I see. Suppose apart from photos/videos I don't generally need to shift stuff from phone to desktop and when I want a file from the desktop that's not on my phone it only takes a minute to download it from Zovo. I don't deal with lots of big files though. Just trying to work out if these (FolderSync looks cool) would be any use to me!

I mainly used Foldersync to automatically upload any photos on the phone as soon as I got wifi access.  Now I'm on unlimited data it's not really so important but if you're not then it's a handy little app.

Similarly if there are large files I just use sftp (Secure File Transfer Protocol) when I'm on WiFi at home (bar the dumb mistake I mentioned below)  ES File Explorer has this built in.  I also have my computers folders set up as NFS (Network File Systems) which can be mounted by ES File Explorer, handy as I can browse films on the desktop from the phone and send them to be played on the Raspberry Pi (although the Pi has them listed as it too mounts them as NFSs).

Discovered the rather brilliant Portal and Portal 2 for the PS3 at the weekend when a friend bought the later round to play, really good thought provoking problem solving game.

Portalize is a "port" to Android.

Anyone used Mobile Observatory for Android? Looking for something a bit more detailed than Google Star Map for our holiday in Dumfriesshire, which is apparently a really good place for stargazing.

I've been using this for circa 2 years now. It's expensive, but brilliant, and better with each update.

Cheers, this is handy. Like the dismissive message when you go to reply - it's like dense wrote it.

Try editing your profile, it gets better!

It seems PMs don't work too well on it (or they don't on my Nexus 7) but the developer is aware / contactable so it'll likely get fixed.

That was what I meant to link to but somehow got it horribly wrong...  :wall: Dropsync has been on my phone for years but will soon be getting removed due to being made obselete by FolderSync.

WebSharing is another option which avoids having to sync to the cloud (laborious if moving large files) and you don't have sFTP or network file sharing (NFS) setup on your desktop/laptop/NAS.  Also useful for moving things between mobile devices (phone/tablet) which don't have sFTP/NFS.

Text Secure will be integrated into CyanogenMod - https://whispersystems.org/blog/cyanogen-integration/

I just need to convince everyone I know to install CyanogenMod (or start using TextSecure) now.

This is a great story of how a homeless man was offered $100 or to be taught how to code (and a free used laptop).

Today he's published his application "Trees for Cars" which helps people car pool...

Quote
Trees for Cars is a mobile carpooling app that connects drivers and riders. Every car on the road contributes to pollution by emitting CO2. By using Trees for Cars to find rides in your area, you’ll be helping the environment because more carpooling means fewer cars on the road.

Download the app, sign in, and tell us whether you want to offer rides or take a ride. We’ll connect you with the riders or drivers closest to your complete route.

Since my android 4.3 upgrade last week I have been utilising the ability to limit the accessibility of apps by using Permission Manager. Great for stopping facef*ck looking at your call list/ contacts etc. It also shows the last time an app uses the access it requested.

On a related note Permission Friendly app lists the various access each app has and rates them on how intrusive they are and if they are relevant to the function of the app. It is also one of the few apps I have installed that has absolutely no permissions. Great.

In their wisdom this feature has been removed from 4.4.2 so don't upgrade if you want to use it (it was only introduced to 4.3 anyway)...

Yeh, saw that the other day, very disappointing. I'm not one for being overly paranoid but you have to wonder what some apps are doing with completely needless permissions.

A work around could be to use Advanced Permission Manager. It appears to allow you to remove certain permissions of an app then automatically re-compiles it. I haven't tested this yet as it's easier to use Permission Manager if you have android 4.3. No doubt I'll look at it again when 4.4 rolls out on my device in Jan.

Just came in to suggest that.

An app that has this and slightly more features, which includes generating a QR code on one device to scan with another to share files (and folders in Pro version) is SuperBeam (sounds similar to an app that comes with newer Motorola phones that PaulB mentioned last night that facilitates moving phones in a similar manner, I came across this by chance last week).
