Ever crossed your legs in the cinema waiting for the "best" time to go for a piss?

Well now there's RunPee which tells you the best times in films to empty your bladder (via The Register).

Just make sure you check before the movie starts....

Auto-BAHN (application to allow your phone to form part of an ad-hoc wireless network when telecommunications are down).

But why? Say GSM is down and you all go adhoc to each other over 802.11 - what for? you can now connect to each other but theres still no backhaul to the internet, so whats the point? I suppose in this age of civil disobedience one could use it to IM ones rioting colleagues or something, but most of the IM infrastructures require you to post to a server rather than direct device to device...

Niche at best.

At some point you might reach someone who does have a signal?

Isn't this how internet is provided in rural Africa, ad-hoc networks piggy-backing to an eventual access point?

Does that mean you can turn a phone into a walkie-talkie/ pager even with no reception? I can think of loads of climbing or work situations when that would have been amazingly useful.

I guess if you had another application that supported direct messaging over such a network then yes.

there are Android apps available I think? (actually scratch that, they all seem dependant on 3g access [that I can find]). I'm surprised it hasn't been done given the ability to use an android phone as a hotspot is built into the os!

the problem you then have is that wireless range is about 10m, so unless your nodes are all within pretty close proximity to each other aint gonna work either!

Dont mean to wee on anyones strawbs, and yes, there could be an application for localized walkie talkie comms (isnt this what push to talk was?), but in practice the technology would restrict its effectiveness.

The problem, fact fans, is that wireless uses the 2.8GHz frequency range which means the wavelength is very short and therefore it has poor range. GSM, by comparison, is 1800Mhz which means the wavelength is an order of magnitude longer and therefore it works across longer distances.

(update: push to talk was this but on GSM network)

I'm confused as my rf-602's (radio triggers) are 2.4Ghz and have a reliable working range of 100m?

All you gotta do then paul is devise a code for communicating via instantaneous flashes.

Ok, I didnt check that out it was all from memory, and i am sort of right as thats more or less the range indoors - and who in their right mind uses wireless outside!?! Theoretical maximum range of 802.11b (2.4GHz) is 140m outdoors. I wouldnt reasonably expect it to actually work at this distance.

However, as you are no doubt gagging to point out - 802.11b has been superceded by g and indeed n which boasts a theoretical outdoor range of 240m, but as I would remind you - the further you are away from the AP the less bandwidth you have. A station on top of the AP will get most (but not usually all) the theoretical capacity of the channel, and the further you move away the slower it will get.

Remember also, its a contended access medium, so the more stations you get, so performance degrades further.

I've been known to sit in my garden with the laptop or phone connected to the wireless, no problems there (untill it starts raining that is).

Posted originally here but have dragged it to the App thread instead.

Push Football Scores Lite - looks like a decent app and has been recently updated to cover Championship teams at least. Also uses the push function which it would seem uses up less data\power.

Gave this a go on the HTC and it seems to work really well - sits in the background and doesn't seem to have any noticeable affect on battery life and the like. Notified me last night of JET's opening goal for Ipswich and the subsequent goals by Northampton. Also alerted to half time and full time scores.

The free version only allows you to follow one team and has a "nag screen" when you open up the settings but other than that a very good app as far as I can see. The paid version has a few extra options and I might upgrade to that some time soon. The only real criticism of it is that I would like to have a custom alert tone but I think I have managed to frig that for now so all good.

Another gem from RegHardware Android App of the Week..

DeskSMS : intergrates SMS text messaging with Gmail/IM on desktop (and presumably your phone as they'll appear in there too).

Cerberus

(Getting seriously fed up with being stuck on 2.1 and too lazy to bother rooting the phone now as I'll be buying a new one myself in a few months).

Cerberus

Is that an app that enhances your brainwaves, and enables you to detect the whereabouts of all the mutants on the planet?

Ah, ok, not seen Harry Potter, but I did read about Greek mythology when I was younger (Knosos made a lasting impression).
