Thanks both. It's for Android (should have mentioned that). Will have a go at the 7-day trial sygic mobile maps (called Aura). That will cover my trip. Thing is the full version costs 50euros! I could buy a tomtom for that. It seems that Nokia are streets ahead with their OV map system.

Don't know why I'm bothering really, I'll just follow one of the thousands of cars going to font from the UK next week.

Might seem expensive, but with TomTom you don't always get all of the maps/features with all devices (which is why they've a range).

Plus it would be one more gadget to have cluttering up things, I think getting as many uses out of one phone is a good thing, plus its transferable when you upgrade your device.

I agree with that to a certain extent but the android GPS programs aren't as good yet. The developers seem too concerned with whistles and bells instead of bread and butter. Downloaded the trial version of Aura (sygic's thing) and initially it seems far too temperamental to rely on let alone part with cash. Will try Aura in anger while I'm away and report back.

Yes you need a reliable program and GPS signal.  I think the lack of reliability is most likely ascribed to the poor reliability of the hardware/GPS signal rather than software.

No, it's software in this case.

Anyway, back from font and my aura trial. On the way down the program kept freezing so I abandoned it and used the gf's trusty Nokia that saw us right. On the way back, after we had cocked up Paris, I tried aura again and it worked perfectly. There's some great touches including the current speed limit, which lane to get into and a speed camera warning with a distance countdown and a beep if you're going too fast. This saved me 2 fines for sure.

It's going cheap at £20 until the 28th of April and I think I'm going to buy it tonight in the hope that the freezing problem is sorted out in the future.

Verdict on Clart's 'safe-o'meter' (ranging from 'well dodgy' to 'safe-as-fuck'): safe

Where all you all getting Swype from?  I can't find it for Android (mine is an HTC Desire HD) in the App Market.

How good is Swype? I am most impressed, it's like some form of black magic!

It freaks me out a bit, how does it know what I am trying to type?  AND it knows all kinds of slang words that the normal dictionary doesn't.  I love it, it's like Black Magic. :))

Just discovered File Expert - well worth a look as it acts as a file manager, back up solution (and app killer should you want it) but it also has the ability to be set up as an HTTP or FTP file server on your WiFi network (like Bluetooth Manager but WiFi based instead). There is also the option to set it up as a SAMBA share with an additional app for those of you running NAS drives.

Another alternative to Swype is FlexT9

Reading about the HTC Sensation it seems they have incorporated a Swype like text input system as part of the new Sense UI.

Forgot to mention I came across FlexT9 as it was featured on RegHardware's Android App of the Week which is worth keeping an eye on.

I doubt this will be much use to anyone, but  :geek: who use Emacs, but I've just successfully got MobileOrg working on my phone syncing over Dropbox with any of the computers I use.  :bounce:

Next thing to do is to get Tasker setup to take dictation notes, convert to text and sync back to Dropbox and my other computers as described here  8)

<geeky background>
Org-Mode for Emacs is a way of keeping notes of ToDo tasks, work thats been done (I like to keep a record of hours spent on work projects) thats incredibly simple and intuitive to use (if you've a vague familiarity with Emacs, even then its pretty easy to pick up).
