Mark's Roof LH @ Gardoms: be careful
November 08, 2010, 08:13:49 pm
The finishing flake on Mark's Roof Left Hand at Gardoms made some hollow "I am only temporary" noises when I used it on Sunday morning.

I know it's been like this for some time, but this time I thought I could feel it vibrate as I grabbed it. It just felt/sounded worse than I remember.

I thought I'd mention this in case there are any other overweight loners who are going up to do it without any spotters. Lobbing off that ledge could be nasty.

I know that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death: and that participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions, but boulderers aren't that into the whole "death" thing, so I thought I'd ease my conscience by voicing my observations about the risks.

Think about leaving it alone if the inside of the flake is wet?

The holds lower down look more snappy, but at least a pad will save you from their failure.

Be safe out there

I don't think I was clear enough there.

The flake is still in place despite having my bulk hauling on it.

For the record, I am down to a sprightly 14 stone.

Me and Blob Barker pulled on this the other week for the first time in an age and both commented on how it sounded a bit more hollow than what it used to.  Then again neither of us could remember the extra(?) crimp in the roof to pull on.  Or how to get home ...

A few of us were on this yesterday evening and all commented on it flexing and making hollow noises.  There looks to be a bit of a crack at the base of the main crack- can't remember whether that's always been there.

all that remains now is for some fat bastard to pull it off, fly off the ledge and be killled by a passing sunday driver, leaving behind a killer new hard project. the strong locals excitement will be dulled however when P-Rob (typing that made me feel physically sick) swoops in for the re-send and renames it mloof or something equally shit

is it worth looking at doing some careful preventative glue injection into the top? Probably better than waiting for it to break off, could be invisible if done well.

and if some fat cvnt pulls the repaired flake off and hits the road below (after denting passing cars), who's gonna pay the insurance company?
