I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Dennis Gray's Todrha.

Mind you it is fiction, so maybe not quite what you were after.



A short, but reasonable read is Simon Jakeman's Groundrush. Base jumping; nuff said. Good for a train journey.

Not particularly well known here, but a bit of a legend in SA. May take a bit of finding a copy though.
