.... there's no issue to sam, i dont think he has any interest in climbing press, reports etc, other than i guess stuff being recorded for guides, hence he really really just doesnt give a fuck about any of the paraphenalia that seems to come with climbing these days... just a guy trying to climb! Im sure if he were to do FA of something then he would make it down for the record, but why shout about repeats?

You may well be right, but this contradicts what others (Sam's mates?) have said earlier in this thread.

I think we've reached the nub here. I don't imagine he is pissed off (although I don't know him well having only met him a handful of times) more bemused and amused by the attention. I think we've got a storm in a teacup.

I'd imagine that most people, even those who desire a low profile (for whatever personal reasons), would be perfectly happy if "news" of their ascents emerged over time.

Anyway back to the ascent, this is well impressive.

well i cant vouch for them ;-)

i guess however it can be interpretted by them as him trying to keep it quite on purpose, maybe he is because he knows a big fuss will be made of it... but i dont think he really pays too much attention to it, he's too interested in actually climbing these things.... honestly the guy only got the internet about 6 months ago, so he doesnt understand the shear level of excitement that gets created around these sort of repeats.

I think people speaking for him has already caused enough problems. Lets stick to what he's done rather than what he might think.

Because its a gaskins problem, I would rather have the 2nd asscent of a gaskins v14 then the first of my own (maybe trying to decide now but i think so).  This clearly proves that I am a weirdo, obsesed with the history and individuals inside climbing, what this proves I dont know.   Human intrest I suppose.

Oh god I am actually a trainspotter.  Gutted.

Fair enough, but more to the point why tell me if he 'wasn't hugely happy' about the news getting out?

Because you e mailed me to ask, and when I told you I said to keep it quiet and you kindly agreed.

I suppose we've done well keeping quiet since July.

I was referring to why Sam told me, not you.

Ah right, me being dim again.  I know what you mean, and whilst it may jot be logical I keep quiet as he's asked me to.  He said today "I don't want to br on the Internet", so it's not so much people being hold just WWW related.

Can we just delete all these posts or move them off this thread?  It's a debate that will go on, and has been done before.

I wonder how many instances of secretive heroes are actually down to friends being over-precious about their privileged information?

Nail on head methinks.

Flippin heck whats the big hoohah?  Whats so bad about some psyched people knowing about a hard problem getting repeated.  Its only a piece of rock. He's not gonna have the paps at his door or find himself headlining news at ten or get mobbed on Blackpool high street. A few people will say good effort on a thread on a interent forum and that'll be it. You don't even have to read it. Like others have said if you don't want people to know stuff you should keep it to yourself.  All this thread would of contained would have been a few 'good efforts' and then that would have been it. As it happens there's 3 pages on the whole affair.

like doylo said if he wants to keep a low profile give it a quick mention on here or greg's site and say no more, dont go leaking it out to various people till it gets whipped up into a big rumour which ends up getting spilled out on here, well done to mr lincoln for not putting up with the bull and just reporting.
