Where would you go?
August 23, 2010, 09:28:57 pm
Nat has her last day at her current job tomorrow and has conveniently managed to delay starting her new one until the 6th leaving us a nice window to use as we see fit.

However, the British weather isn't playing nicely. Recently we had pretty much 16 days in Pembroke, it did rain at times but that didn't stop play as it mostly cleared by the afternoon. I think only two days were actually a complete washout (one of these was in Llanberis). The trouble is the forecast is looking like a biblical storm on Wed, followed by more showers and then some fairly large amounts of wetness at handy intervals and nowhere looks much better?

I'm struggling to think of a sensible backup plan. Ferries are available for a reasonable amount and I'm not adverse to driving but I just can't seem to think of anywhere:

Frankenjura - wet summer so far?
Calanques - a long way and my wheels WILL get stolen
Ceuse - been quite a lot and I'm not in the best of shape so this could be frustrating
Verdon - tempting but a long way and fairly hot
Ablon - know very little about apart from Bob went there sometime last year

Can anyone else think of something that might be a safe bet or offer any comments on the above? Our van is great for some things, but long periods of rain spent inside a caddy will drive anyone insane.

Cheers

Mallorca DWS?

been there done that. Won't ever get Nat to go back due to incidents involving a lot of jellyfish and a small inflatable boat (suitable for one child aged 6-8 years).

A good back up from somewhere like pembroke/llanberis might be to get a ferry over to ireland and go to fairhead? Not been but it looks pretty amazing to me.

Although Eire tends to get as much, if not more rain than the UK.

Multipitch on the Mallos Riglos, Huesca?
Could couple it with Rodellar, or some Basque country stuff, Etxauri and the like.

Underdeveloped.

SW gets the best of the weather, and things to do if weather is crap.

As a curveball, how about Jersey?

Dave Reiff and Torridon do get a bit of a rain shadow, but it can be just as crap as anywhere if heavy rain sets in.

We'd be driving just as we have very little time to sort anything else out. Thankfully yr.no has swung the other way (it seems a bit rubbish at the minute?) and it now looks better in Pembroke.

Out of the suggestions L'Eaux Claires has been on my hitlist since the hilarious video on DrTopo.
Riglos - its good but we did a few bits and bobs whilst Rodellar was wet and Nat still isn't up to Fiesta due to the steepness. I think compared to other rock types it gets pretty similar very quickly!

Thanks

I can't see that, but if it involves an irate Frenchman at the end then yes. Its on my phone from way back when.

Edit: yes that one

Dare I suggest Skye? I've found that even if the Cuillins are lagged in then climbing can still take place in Trotternish or Neist.

Possibly Arran? We went there one long weekend when the rest of the British Isles were flooding and saw no rain. Strange little sheltered island.

seems yr.no was being the prophet of doom and is now being a little more level headed.

never had much faith in yr.no TBH.

there are many forecast site to choose from, keep looking until you see a forecast you like

I love the presentation at yr.no, but at the end of the day its just a computer in Norway, and no better than metcheck. I don't bother looking at anything other than MetOffice nowadays - the UK forecasts have a healthy dose of human input, and their computer models aren't shabby to start with.

I've been to Arran 4 times, every time it pissed down, I think you got lucky, Will.  ;)

Don't come over here. Don't do it to yourself. Its been various combinations of miserable and frustrating for the last 2 months, i.e. stays dry just long enough to get to the crag, maybe even get a warmup done, then pisses down for the rest of the day  >:(

It is really cool....when its not raining  :P

I've been, it rained almost every day then the one dry day was spent with me holding down a skyhook for somebody else.

Sounds like a familiar enough story alright  :) . Pity really, as its amazing when the sun shines. But we've already had our 5 allotted dry days this year

Gorges D Tarn could be a good bet at this time of year. The nearby Gorges Du Jonte should satisfy any adventure/multipitch ambition.
