Help needed for Devon guidebook
June 17, 2010, 11:22:16 am
Down in Devon at the moment and desperately searching the shops in and around Torquay for a guide to Ansteys and (hopefully) the deep water soloing. I know of Javu but am keen for some hard copy literature if possible. Waterstones say no as do the tourist information centres.

Any help much appreciated. One time.

This is the only one I'm aware of:

http://www.climbers-club.co.uk/guidebooks/ci-sw-intotheblue.html

Not sure if it goes as far west as Anstey's though. I've got the guide at home  so can check later if you like?

'Into the blue' is an early CC DWS to to Swanage- Conner Cove (Fisherman's Ledge etc.), it's in Dorset, so doesn't include Devon.

Rockfax's 'Deep Water' has a good section on DWS on the South Devon Coast- make sure you do White Rhino Tea at Berry Head- it's class!

Re: Anstey's, Cordee's 'South Devon and Dartmoor' has Ansteys in it, although it's old (1995) it still covers Ansteys well. There's a supplement that also covers the DWS developments on the coast, though IMO I think the Rockfax guide is clearer for that.

Quick Google for "climbing shops devon" returned these hits.  No idea if any of them are near you.

If you can make it to Exeter then Taunton Leisure (in the centre of Exeter) or Cotswold (Darts farm at Clyst St George just outside Topsham) are your best bets. Cotswold will be much easier to get to by car & is a bit over half an hour from Torquay if the traffic's ok.

Otherwise there's a big outdoor store at Ashburton but I think it's more of a general kayaking/cycling/rambling type shop, never actually been in there though.

The latest Rockfax Dorset guide covers Ansteys, and the other stuff round there, and all the Dorset DWS.

As to where you can pick one up, not sure.  Other than coming up to bristol

Time didn't permit in obtaining a guidebook but we had a quick nip into Anstey's Cove and met some very friendly folk who showed us the lines. Matt nipped up Empire of The Sun (I think it was?) then we had to shoot back for wedding prep. Definitely keen to get to Devon again. My first time there and I absolutely loved the place. Brixham was particularly delightful and the seafood even more so.

Great stuff. Just don't try and find parking in Brixham in midsummer.
