drill my shoes??
June 02, 2010, 04:31:02 pm
hi all, i have a pair of five ten vmiles in size 9 (i think) and im street size 9 1/2 or 10 so they are nice and tight and precise so help me climb better :) but they have given me a blister on my next to my big toe ,toe just above the nail, they are new and have only worn them 4 hours so shall i wait more and break them in more or should i drill a small hole where they are rubbing thus letting my toe poke out a little or just giving my toe some air and so it doesn't rub on the material on the shoe??? and am i right in thinking the shoe's will stretch a little?? cheers in advance

Shoes will stretch, drilling a hole will just create an edge that will rub worse than it already has.

You can aid the stretching of your shoes by putting plastic bags on your feet and slipping the shoes on then wearing them round the house, or pissing on them.*

* Only one of those is likely to be effective  :P

Don't drill them, daft idea. You will just get rubbing on the edges of the hole creating more blisters and continually get sand and crap going in the hole. The shoes will soften up, and the skin on your toe should harden up once the blister goes.

Stick your feet in plastic shopping bags, wet your shoes, pop them on, hop around the house for half an hour. Repeat regularly till comfy.

yep, or stick them in the bath.

Getting them wet and stretching them kind of stretches the whole lot though. You could try the cobblers way of trying to stretch them more locally with a wooden spoon.

That would work. So would sticking them in a bucket/basin etc for a minute.

Wear thin socks in them. The obvious solution to prevent further blistering.

I found the most effective to stretch shoes is to stick them in a Ziplock bag. Dip them in a big pan of boiling water and take them after about 45 secs to a minute (don't do any longer as the glue will melt) and wear them for as long as you can (you can couple this with the plastic bag mentioned previously)

Wet shoes/plastic bags works really well with leather shoes (should only take one fitting). If you have 5:10'swith their vegan leather (Cowdura - groan) it can take longer..

Just leave them out in a warm room to dry, or hang them on the washing line in the sun.

Put a wrap of finger tape round the toe thats getting blistered.

My second toe is longer than my big toe so I get this all the time with tight fitting shoes.

The thread title keeps making me think of Partridge:

Drill my shoes you mother!

Seriously, glad the stretching's worked but I'd ditch the socks at the earliest opportunity unless you want to be mistaken for Fiend.

Most people find that they lose some sensitivity by wearing socks in rock shoes however some freaks people don't notice any difference or even prefer socks. Either way you can't avoid the fact that wearing socks makes you look like Fiend a dick.

Plus it prevents your boots from developing such a rank smell that no-one would even consider nicking them.

I don't like the feeling of rock shoes with socks on personally, feels like it makes my feet slide about in the shoe.
