Shoulder Injury - rotator cuff?
May 14, 2010, 11:02:08 am
When I was last in Font I started getting a tweek in my shoulder. This has now deteriorated over the past month to the point where my shoulder feels a lot weaker and in certain positions it feels like it may come out of joint. I climbed yesterday and seem to have made it worse. I'm a bit worried as I've never had any sort of injury before. When I raise my arm up and slowly let it down to my side it hurts. Does this sound like a rotator cuff injury? If so what should I do? If not, any ideas what it could be? I'm well pissed off as I feel strong aside from this and there are a few hard things I am close to so I want to get over it quickly.
Any help or info woul be much appreciated.
Cheers
Tom

Sorry to hear it hasn't settled, I remember you mentioning it at Gasthaus Unterschlag.

There's a possibility is will be cuff related, but if I were you I wouldn't muck about- I'd get seen by a decent physio that knows about shoulders.  I'm sure someone on here can recommend one over your way.

Hope it all gets sorted!

Cheers. Yeah, it's certainly getting worse and I'm a bit worried now. Usually when I get little aches and pains they go after a few days. If anyone can recommend a Leeds-based physio that'd be great.

It used to be like that!

I'm going back ten years now(!), but there used to be physio who you could see at Leeds Wall. Was quite climber canny.

Yeah, the have one at the Depot who seems pretty good. They only thing is I'm a poor bastard and can't afford regular £50 sessions to sort it out. I work at Leeds Uni and hoping that some students need a guinea pig to work on but a bit reluctant to do that too.

No point in seeing a physio unless they have the SKILLS, which vary a lot between physios and need experience of a lot of people and injuries and responses to treatment to get, in my opinion.

Perhaps it might need a couple of 'spensive physio sessions to give you an idea of the problem and some exersises etc. You dont' normally have to sign up to a load of appointments at once..

That's is the approach I'm leaning too, although a couple of sessions will cost me about £100, which after my recent spending isn't really an option for a while.
Cheers for advice anyway, it all points towards the inevitable - see someone who knows what they are doing!

So you asked for a physio recommendation, but don't want to have to pay for it, and you are considering trying to get a free one at uni, but are reluctant about that too.

You don't ask much do you? :)

Exactly!
I suppose I've got to decide whether I want my shoulder or a holiday. Tough choice.

Most probably not but I'm going to choose somewhere with some rocks nearby (standard!). I promised the girlfriend we'd go on a relaxing gastro, beach hol.

Hmm, that's a tougher call. Is there nothing you can sacrifice/sell - a good physio is worth it!

Tom, when I was based in Leeds I went to these guys for advice and treatment for my shoulder problems http://www.alirose.net/

One of the guys there is a climber and I thought they offered a good service.  Prices were ok but I was a student at the time.  Not sure what the full rates are now.

I've sprained my shoulder this week, it feels feeble as shit now, in certain planes of movement I can't lift my hand above my head. Looks like I'll be taking it easy for a while.

If you're having difficulty raising your arm to the side with your thumb down then it points to a rotator cuff injury. I had one 14 months ago and my shoulder is still weak now but if not sorted they can lead to complications like winging scapula and also dodgy elbows (technical term).

When I lived in Leeds 10 years ago I used to see a decent physio in Guiseley at the Aireborough L Centre, did a good job, think it's the same guy (scroll down 8 entries)

I'd consider Simon Aldous, who's an ESP (extended scope practitioner) physio who specialises in... shoulders. Funnily enough.
