Best yorkshire grit crags
April 25, 2010, 09:02:39 am
Im heading up to yorkshire next weekend for a days bouldering at Caley but we would also like to get a day of trad in. Having not been to many Yorkshire crags(only Almscliffe) i would like to know which are the best for aretes and walls. Cheers

There are a few good trad routes at Caley and across the road at Chevin if you fancy mixing it up.

I personally don't really rate Earl for trad routes, some nice ones, but a bit scattered and usually slabs and cracks. What sort of grades are you looking at?

I've heard good things about Great Wolfrey.

Probaby at those grades a few good things at Earl then. And Ilkley / Rocky Valley. Brimham has a fair bit too, but can be a bit disorientating on first acquaintance. Otherwise a lot of main Yorkshire Crags - Rylstone, Crookrise, Eastby, Deer Gallows, etc trend towards slabbiness.

Never made it as far as Great Wolfrey - was always put off by the long drive and the long walk to get there. Looks very good though.

Great Wolfrey is cool - the longest walk-in in Yorkshire for sure, but the crag is really nice. Some good-looking walls and aretes with plenty in the E1-4 range, and considering how little traffic they must get the routes looked reasonably clean. Didn't try any of the harder ones myself, but they looked a lot more inspiring than i had expected. Well worth a visit!
