Bouldering in the Scottish Borders
May 15, 2010, 08:36:10 pm
Was just wondering if anyone knows of any good bouldering in the Scottish Borders. Particularly around the Peebles/Biggar area. I have searched around but there seems to be very little information and the area isn't really cover by the Stone Country's 'Bouldering in Scotland' guide. Surely there must be some good climbing in the Southern Uplands.

Word.

Northumberland is the best bet from there. Anything that may be of interest gets a mention in Lowland Outcrops and there isn't much. There is a bit on the beach at Gullane, but to be honest it's pretty shit - sandy and quite soft. There is one little lip traverse, and an arete IIRC, but it's all a bit pants and only worthwhile if you are going to the beach with the family for the day and fancy a potter.

Hmmmm. Yeah maybe just heading to Northumberland or Carrock Fell in the Lakes is the best bet. Still there must be a crag hidden away somewhere in the Borders. Maybe i should get the maps out and go exploring.

A geological map might be more useful.. see if there are any teeny outcrops of anything climbable there?

You8 can get to Dumfriesshire in a lot less time than Carrock Fell, or any of the Glasgow area stuff.

I've been to Carrock Fell before and really liked it. It was amazingly quiet for how nice a day it was. Glorious sunny saturday, but not too hot and we were the only people there. Climbing seemed really good quality too.

Is the stuff in the Dumfries and Galloway good? I've just order the Bouldering in Scotland guide so will hopefully check it out soon.

Cheers for all the advice.

Not been myself, but will know this time next month.

Some useful stuff here;

http://www.scottishclimbs.com/wiki/Bouldering

http://www.scottishclimbs.com/wiki/Garheugh_Point looks quite nice, but it's quite far west.

Thirlstane looks quite nice too, as does Clifton. But it's not an area I know particularly well, as it.s almost as far from me as you can get while still being in Scotland (if you exclude the Shetlands)
