Good spots near Lee Matlock?
August 07, 2009, 10:58:49 pm
I am helping my sister in law with moving next Thurs/Fri/Sat, she is moving to (if memory serves) Lee Matlock. Can anyone recommend any spots around there? Need to be fairly close with not much of a walk-in as time is likely to be very tight. Oh and easy grades

Limestone, you have Willersley which is about 5 minutes drive and a 2 minute walk in, the next nearest half decent venue would be railway slabs at black rocks another 5 minutes in the car and then 2 minutes walking.
Fiend can no doubt list all sorts of esoterica but ignore him.

For really easy grades, but excellent quality rock and volume of problems/ routes Harborough Rocks are only a few minutes further than Black Rocks. Just past Wirksworth.

There is actually a crag within a mile of Lee called Leeshaw Brow. Full details will be in the new BMC south peak grit guide when it comes out. Shortish south facing grit crag with a few highball boulder probs. Pretty good little crag really.
You’re also very near to Secret Garden (the crag not the bouldering venue). Much better and cleaner than the Whatstandwell quarries. Hwoever you need to be stealthy as it is in someones (very large) garden.
A little further out is Shining Cliff which has some really good routes and the od bit of bouldering.

Leeshaw Brow will be as green as f--k right now (I think), I also remember the landings being quite spicy

It'll be leafy and possibly overun with ants but being south facing is unlikely to be especially green I'd have thought.

Clarification - it is actually Lea not Lee Matlock but doesn't seem to make too much no how.

*Ancient bump*
We are back on for this weekend/begining of next week for three days dedicated climbing
The venues look like being Harborough Rocks/Robin Hood's Stride and Stanage. If you have any thoughts on how weather conditions might affect these venues I'd be interested to know but from what I can see the forecast does an about turn every twenty four hours so quite hard to say.
Can't wait

Also, bradley quarry boulders, turningstone edge, cocking tor and ravensnest tor are about 5mins away if your looking for brilliant, quirky, grit esoterica. all will be in the new guide, check out the chatsworth 96 guide whist your waiting
